ATOT is a prime example of what the OP is saying.
Angry atheists on this forum make it a point to tell religious folks that they believe in a "sky fairy" or "fairy tale" or call their texts "outright lies" among other things. So much for religious tolerance... it's a two-way street.
Tolerance doesn't mean we have to keep silent about ridiculous unprovable claims paraded as "truth" simply because lots of people believe it. And the bible is a book of stories, myth, fiction, polite ways of saying lies.
Actually, that's exactly what tolerance means. Here, I'll make your words slightly more extremist to illustrate the point.
"Tolerance doesn't mean we have to pretend that black people can be just as intelligent as whites just because lots of people believe it."
You can shit all over someone's beliefs for no reason, but that's intolerance.
Tolerance does not mean sitting silent no matter what other people say. I meant intolerant in the sense of passing laws, or physically or otherwise preventing you from saying what you want to say because of it's content.
Merriam webster:
2 a: unwilling to grant equal freedom of expression especially in religious matters b: unwilling to grant or share social, political, or professional rights
I am not unwilling to grant equal freedom of expression to someone because of their beliefs, I'm pretty strict on the 1st amend. People have the right to be as dumb as they want and say things no matter how stupid they are, and I have the right to shit on them for it.
