Thats the best reply in this thread. There are idiot religious people and idiot atheists that like to spread the word of their beliefs or lack thereof. Especially online where its easier to just type something instead of confronting people face to face. To say that you dislike atheists because a couple of them like to confront you on your beliefs or that some people online have made you hate atheists is just stupid. I don't dislike all Christians because a some extremists try to push their beliefs on me.

Actually I shouldn't say I don't know any in real life, I do, my friends younger brother who is in high school. He goes to an all guys Catholic school and my friend and I joke around that he is the anti-christ. I find that with him, he is young, filled with tons of thoughts/ideas, but at least in real life he is respectful to a certain extent. Online he does talk a bit of smack and try to bring me down, but I tell him I don't really care what his thoughts or opinions are on the subject. I also find it funny because he has a priest as his religion teacher who is a crazy smart bastard (I had him in high school also). He won't mention to the priest he is atheist, even though he attends class everyday and completes all the assignments, conflicted thoughts of a young mind I guess.

First off, he doesn't attend Catholic school by choice. His parents probably make him go there. Secondly, you like to joke around with him that he is the anti-christ? Sounds like you are a bigot. You like to belittle people's beliefs and put it aside as joking. I bet he doesn't think of it like that. Gosh forbid someone challenges your beliefs and you step up on the soapbox.

Ah well....

Lol God, I love how you just know everything about my friends and I. Fast fact catchup for you: He goes there by choice, he lives with a single mom, he does whatever he wants. Joking around is fun and part of human nature. His brother jokes around with me. You sound like a total idiot? Why do I know this? Your assumption of looking someones profile up and commenting that they are from Utah when obviously THEY JUST LIVE THERE AND MUST OF CAME FROM SOMEWHERE ELSE!

yay

so so dumb, you spiked my retardation levels today 10 fold, and I must say, people on ATOT are pretty non intelligent, as expected though. Anyone come up with a % number yet of actual solid responses in this thread yet?

Wow folks. Here is the best example in the thread. According to "religious people", all of the comandments are equal. They are not ranked or weighted. He just used the lord's name in vein. That is the same as killing someone, adultery, etc.

What a bunch of hypocritical blowhards.

You are missing the whole point of the thread. This is not about fanatacism or obeying your particular religion to the full extent. I also used to listen to Marilyn Manson? Does that make me a terrible Roman Catholic? Lol people are pretty stupid on here, seriously Every page makes me feel like I was protected in a huge big safety bubble and not infected with IQ decomposition.

Also I want to put this out there, I don't pay attention much to what mods allow on the forums and how far things go with personal attacks, but I am suprised at some of the comments here. I wonder what will happen the day I utter some personal attacks against the idiot revolt here...

Hold on there pardner, can't let you get away with shit like that. Hawking is religious you say? Um, no. He knows all religious myth and superstition is just that, and denies any personal god relationship, similar to Einstein.

http://www.leaderu.com/real/ri9501/bigbang2.html
"Now, lest anyone be confused, let me state that Hawking strenuously denies charges that he is an atheist. When he is accused of that he really gets angry and says that such assertions are not true at all. He is an agnostic or deist or something more along those lines."

Further back down the path you have the church refusing to acknowledge the heliocentric model, and currently evolution (though the pope has come around, most religious americans haven't gotten there yet.) Religious people fight tooth and nail every time science shows them they were wrong before they ultimately capitulate, but always too late to save any credibility.

Believe in god all you want, but believing in historic events religions portray as true is to engage in self-delusion.

Please, when have the Roman Catholics ever paraded their religion around or attempted to force their views on others?

Many of the Japanese responsible for the rape of Nanking were Buddhists, and in the past Christians were persecuted in Japan.

Not everything is black and white.

Most American Roman Catholics don't go around trying to convert others. There's nothing ironic about that.

I completely agree, religious belief does not belong in law or government. I believe in a completely secular state.

However, that is completely irrelevant. Trying to convert others to atheism does nothing to the religious climate in Washington. It is impossible to convert the people who most need converting; the Fred Phelps and the followers of Clear Channel will NEVER be persuaded, and they're the ones with all of the money, power, and political motivation to push religious agendas into Washington!

LOL

Some of the greatest scientists of all time were religious.

Just a few of them -
Boyle
Kepler
Newton
Faraday
Maxwell
Kelvin
Planck

These are some of the most famous names in all of Physics and Chemistry. But hey, they were religious, so obviously Maxwell's Equations (one of the greatest achievements in all of science) are illogical and not based on reason at all.

Aside - obviously the Catholic church is reluctant to accept new science, but that is irrelevant; its members can be very logical and very interested in trying to understand the world with more than blind faith even if the institution tends to be slower on the uptake.

Your absolute faith in the idea that religious people are illogical is sickening. The only result of your post is the revealing that you are the furthest thing from a logical thinker.

Like jail and torture using disemboweling, fire, water, rocks, dirt, iron maidens, the wheel, the rack and pretty much anything else they can dream up in their intolerant and perverted sadomasochistic insane minds they used to convert you and make you confess against your will, just to save your soul while they kill your body in the process just for those Golden Halo Jesus Points.

And BTW, did anyone ever really honestly think either then or now, that those horrifying and horrendous acts committed in the name of Christianity were somehow going to get them a prime spot in Heaven as Gods right hand men?

I think so. There were even popes that guaranteed these kinds of things. That's why there were martyrs.

Do suicide bombers in the Middle East honestly believe that their acts somehow guarantee them a prime spot in Heaven? They probably think so, yes.

Because conquistadors conquered the region around 500 years ago? Christian conversion was not the first thing on their mind; missionaries did come through the region, but you're describing a region destroyed by an invading force that happened to be Christian. Edit: If Spain was a Buddhist nation, Mexico today would be a Buddhist nation. When you have military might, you don't need missionaries. Still, missionaries DID go through the region... 400-500 years ago.

Past != Present, get that through your head.

Yeah, pretty much. It's a fact: the Spaniards wanted gold and silver, and it didn't matter where it came from. Why would it make you feel bad in the first place? And why do you feel better after hearing a basic history lesson? If you want to feel bad about it, feel bad about the millions who died from exhaustion after being forced into slavery by the Spaniards. The religious conversion should be the LAST thing to feel bad about, if at all... if you're an atheist, why would that even matter to you? They're all wrong anyway, right?

And why won't you recognize that your reply regarding religion being a plague was completely irrelevant to what I posted?

Then why on Earth are you talking about the Buddhist Japanese conquering China? Religions (and I'm not singling any out specifically) have been behind some of the most atrocious acts and bloodiest wars in human history. That's not a good argument in favor of ANY religion; you make it sound as though the Christians should be allowed a "gimme" because they were fed to the lions in ancient Rome. It doesn't work that way.

But the real issue here is the irony in the following statement: "I, as a Roman Catholic, don't go around parading my religion or views onto anyone." The statement is ironic for two reasons. First, the history of the Roman Catholic Church is filled with examples of the Church parading around their religion and attempting to force their views onto people (which continues to this day); saying you don't parade your views around specifically because you are a member of a group that does is ironic. Second, the poster of this quote is also the author of the OP, a diatribe ranting about atheists, which could be viewed as an attempt to share his views with us... And coming right out and saying "I am this religion, but I don't parade it around," well that's the very definition of irony.

So, all arguments about the validity of religion or atheism aside, do you see the irony in that statement?

I'm using it as an example. ATOT likes to pretend that Buddhism is a 100% innocent religion. Religion doesn't kill people, it's just an excuse for murderers.

I'm not saying the Catholics back then should be excused. I'm suggesting that the Catholics today are blameless for events caused by people from millenia ago. In fact, 99% of the Catholics back then were blameless, too! The REAL Catholics were then and are today the ones who believe in "Do unto others." The REAL Catholics take the New Testament as it is meant to be taken. It is not literal truth, but a moral guideline: suggestions for being nice not only to your friends, but to the downtrodden, the sick, and the poor.

Okay, I didn't realize it was the OP making that reply. In that case, the second point is the very definition of irony. However, the first point makes light of the fact that most Catholics tend to be quiet about their religion out of respect for others. Catholicism is probably the least aggressive Christian religion today. Have you ever met a Mormon?

The real irony is that you replied to the statement 'past != present' and then immediately confused the two. I am not a missionary here to convert people. I'm just a guy. I believe in my own truth. Sure, some Catholics have done some fucked up things, but please point out any single group that hasn't had its crazies. That doesn't excuse them, but I'm not going to lie down when people accuse all Catholics of being illogical murderers. I'm going to point out that they're simple-minded fools!

He was a man in the sky until we started to gain the ability to really see into the sky, well beyond Earth. Eventually the prospect of a "man" in the sky was lost (though the Bible says we were created in God's image, go figure), so now he's just some "cosmic entity."

To paraphrase an old saying, "When you're a particle physicist, everything starts looking like a particle."

A curiosity of the "man in the sky" thing - aren't church bells really damn loud so that God can hear them?
There's a church right here on campus, and for a few great weeks at the start of the semester, the bells weren't ringing. But now again, every 15 minutes, they start up again. They're loud, and you just about have to stop class while they make their racket.

1) If God is everywhere, why bother making them really loud?
2) If God is "up in the sky," the sound won't make it past the atmosphere anyway.
