All of us with a license knows that the right lane is for slow moving vehicles and the left lane is for passing (fast moving vehicles).

Being the conscientious driver that I am, I understand that if I'm in the left land and see someone HAULING ASS and coming up QUICK on my tail...I move over, no fuss no muss, just get over and let them pass then come back to the lane.

Being a driver for over 13 years, I also understand that hoping for even a SMALL amount of people to be as conscientious is just empty hope.

So when it turns out that I'M the guy doing the ass hauling and the NAIVE monkeys in front of me just DRIFTING in the Left Lane don't understand the rule of moving a lane over to let me pass, I have discovered the Right Lane! It's AMAZING how much time I spend in this lane!...PASSING people!

I have become Mad Max, The Road Warrior.

Well, it's just a chance I'll have to take.

My only recourse is to RIDE RIGHT UP SOMEBODIES ASS in the left lane and HOPE they move over...Which I've done, BUT some people are just daft!

I need to get me that truck from the 3DMark2001 Game Test, the one with the mounted heavy cannons in the back.

>AFAIK, passing in the right lane is illegal.

Are you sure about that? I don't remember ever learning in Driver's Ed anything about passing from the right being illegal (and boy did we learn every irrelevent law out there). I mean, it isn't considered to be as safe but I don't think there's anything truly illegal with passing on the right. . . .

What gets my butt is the self rightous gray hairs, full of themselves, inspired by the AARP, that the roads is theres to, and they do not have to follow any of the rules of the road. @ssholes. We need to make annual driving tests mandatory for geriatrics, and grade them hard.

Yes its illegal, although after giving an extended period of time to the person in front of me to move over I have been known to use it.

I hate aggressive drivers who think that their lives/destinations are more important than anyone else's....

I cackle with glee everytime I see one pulled over....

I laugh whenever someone makes a big deal of passing me in traffic and beats me to the red light.... I usually turn to look over at them and give them my best "Oh, you are SOOOO coool!" smile or I wave to them when they look in the rear view mirror (Here I am! You thought you left me behind, but see, I'm still right here!). "Give your brakes a nice workout?" I purr if the windows are down.

Mind you, I am an excellent driver (Dad taught me, and he flew helicopters in Korea/drove a fire engine for a living) and I drive over the speed limit all the time. I just believe in something called 'sharing the road'. Square of me, I know...

If I am doing 80-85 in the left lane (speed limit 70) and some joker wants to pass me going 95, I'll change lanes when it's safe. I am not going to come up on someone else's ass or cause an accident just because someone wants to speed even faster than me.

Once I am sure I will not be endangering myself or any other drivers (one must see the big picture, you know), I pull into the right lane and silently pray that the speed demon behind me gets pulled over by the next lurking highway patrol officer.

Just thought it might be a good idea to let you know the other side of the story.

I see little evidence that anyone in the DC metro area knows this basic fact. Here in Virginia there is a law that states that people in the left lane must yield right of way when signaled by an approaching driver. The police do not enforce this law period. They currently are running a revenue enhancement program here called "Smooth Operator" where they are supposedly targeting aggressive drivers. Sadly they never get these morons that camp out in the left lane. IMHO they are every bit as aggressive and dangerous as the frustrated drivers that are changing lanes constantly trying to get around them.

As long as the car in the left lane is passing the cars in the right lanes, I don't mind... even when there is enough free space in front of him for a runaway. The only time I get upset is when they don't do this and they slow down during the downhills, but other than that, I keep my road rage in check.

Basic rule: if you are holding up 5 or more cars you MUST pull over ASAP and let them by. In Califonia this is the law. Anyone who has done any towing whatsoever should know this. (too bad bicyclists don't).

I usually drive fast, but if someone is going faster than I am willing to go I will always let them by and flush out the cops. On a trip to LA that methodology flushed out two cops that would have got me

So why are people so damned insistant on not moving over? Lack of attention? Lack the the ability to use the mirrors? I don't mean to call all old people unfit drivers, but if you're behind someone that is doing 15MPH then brakes for the corners (yes, this has happened to me) and there is not going to be a passing lane on that road EVER it's easy to get a bit peeved and blow by the guy in a double yellow (he's a non moving obstacle IMO). If that guy ever pulls out infront of me again I am going to literally park my car, run up beside him, and knock on his window and tell him to get off the road (I can run 15MPH for some distance)

I'm with shmorq...

There have been many times that I have been behind someone going a little slower than I normally drive in the left lane, but as long as we are still passing everyone in the right lane, it doesn't really matter. I also realize that it isn't always safe to move into the right lane.... a good driver will be looking for a big enough space to pull over in. Also, I am NOT going to get stuck behind the Winnebago going 60 just to make you happy. Wait 10 seconds and I will pull into the right lane AFTER I am finished passing.

You have to understand... I DO speed... the Mr doesn't but I do, a good 10-15 MPH above the speed limit on the highway, as a general rule.

The 'Wolf Pack' is where the real danger lies... if you are part of the wolf pack, chances are good you are going to either be in an accident or cause one. I see it ALL THE TIME... the wolf pack passes me on I-75, driving agressively and at least 20MPH over the limit, and a few miles later, I see a multi car accident, with some of the same cars pulled over. Hmmmm.

The highway is meant to accomodate all types of drivers. Sadly many highways are only two lanes, especially the long ones here in TX. I have a problem with either a) someone who camps out in a lane going way slower than the rest of the traffic or b) speed demons who serve in and out of lanes just to gain a millisecond of travel time. I think all responsible drivers fall somewhere in between, respectfully yielding right of way to others and expecting others to do the same for them, SAFELY.

Making it illegal to GET PASSED on the right would solve most of societies ills IMHO.

" If you don't like the way I drive, THEN STAY OFF THE SIDEWALK "

I have no idea of the relevance, but I do love the quotation.

@oldandquitemad!

You know what really baffles me?

When someone passes me, pulls in front of me, and then SLOWS DOWN, forcing me to slow down, too! If I see that they are getting off at an exit or something, I understand... but when they do it on a wide open highway, I get really annoyed.

That's the worst!!! Whenever someone pulls this one on me, crazy, dumb ideas start to come into my mind... So far though, I've been able to hold them in check.

wyvrn's got the right idea. As long as people are considerate of other drivers, there would be no problems. There's no reason why anyone should drive 50 MPH when everyone else is trying to go 60-65. That person should be a little more considerate and speed things up and help everyone else out. Along the same lines, those crazy weavers should understand that it's downright rude to cut someone off and then ride the breaks instantly. Obviously, the time was NOT right to attempt the pass. I love it when they get cornered by slow traffic though...

FYI, passing in the right lane is not illegal. It's simply considered more unsafe.

I think the legality of passing in the right lane changes from state-to-state. For example, here in the KC metro area, there are enough exits on the left side of the freeway, that of course, people will be passing on the right. Personally, I have had one ticket and cannot afford to pay off another right now, so when I get on the freeway I set the cruise control to within about 3 miles per hour of the speed limit (on the fast side). What bugs me is when I'm going the legal limit, and somebody pulls up on my bumper acting like I'm the jerk for not speeding. I generally try to stay in the 'off' lane (left or right, depending on how the exits are set up), but even then why is it that when I obey the law, people treat me like I'm doing something wrong?
