I don't begrudge MS, but anyone figure out if free Hotmail access via Outlook is still viable?

As many people say, and I agree with, you can't look a gifthorse in the mouth.

MS offered Hotmail for free for years and years and years. They decided on a marketing strategy that they hope will increase their profits...somehow. Hey, if I was Bill, I'd want to maximize profits too.

So, I don't begrudge MS for ending Outlook support - though I will miss it. I will therefore be looking into other solutions, possible paying solutions, for having Outlook accessible email access (e.g. Gmail, Yahoo, etc...)

In the meantime, is it just a matter of time before someone figures out how to still access Hotmail via Outlook for free, or is it truly a dead horse?

i dont get the point of it. i mean if you are on a computer with outlook on it, chances are you are on a computer with IE on it where you can go to www.hotmail.com .

AFAIK, pop3 access to Hotmail will be stopped, but the proprietry connection methods in Outlook/Outlook Express will continue

Nope, they are slowly terminating even the proprietary methods. Well, not terminating, but reserving them for paying customers and not for the free customers. FWIW, Yahoo! also charges about $20/year to access its webmail via Outlook or some other mail client, and Google seems to have no current plans to make GMail accessible through standard mail clients.

Umm....it takes far less time to sync Outlook/OE with a hotmail account than go through the 3 login screens to view the mail - not to mention reading about a dozen emails.

Time, my man..TIME!

(and those annoying, somewhat offensive ads they have up on the sidebars....)

Doh! I thought Gmail had some way of accessing it via outlook/OE. Silly me for not checking in more detail.

Well, as I said, I can't complain about free services, so, I'll just become a paying customer of one of 'em, I suppose.

Thank God someone spoke up... I had to check the date of this thread multiple times...

And Yahoo POP3 access can be had with YPOPs. Where's this news of Hotmail's protocol no longer being available coming from ?

My own personal experience (email account just changed from 2mb to 250mb, and concommittantly, I can no longer access it via outlook)

As above, how long have you been switched to the 250mb account and still had access. I found I had access for as long as it was 2mb, but as soon as 250mb was the limit, boom...no access.
