No one has an issue with a person not caring for alcohol. Most people do, however, have an issue with someone being a smug asshole about it.

Let's be honest ethanol tastes like crap, seriously

If you like that flavor you are f***ed up
What flavor? pure CH3CH2OH or ethyl alcohol is unpalatable to most, but then again so is sodium chloride, capsaicin, lactose and an number of other things in the pure form. If your refering to beverages with alcohol then you are drinking shit beverages or you just don't like alcoholic drinks. And there's nothing wrong with that, but if we're being honest, it's really fucked up to post a thread with so little information. I don't know how anyone would want to read it.

Much truth to this. Love bourbon barrel aged beer and had my first taste of a bourbon barrel aged cigar last week - amazing. Time to grow up, boys. Put down your energy drinks and man up. A good, well aged Scotch is a delight as well; same for good Cognac.

100% bullshit. I submit my argument in the form of marshmallows https://www.wondermade.com/products/bourbon

I even drink wine aged in old bourbon barrels, beer aged in bourbon barrels. I smoke cigars that have been aged in bourbon barrels. The taste is amazing. The reason the youth doesn't like whiskey is that their taste buds have yet to develop a passion for dry and bitter flavors. As you age you start to enjoy sweet less and dry more. Thus why many move from sweet wines to dry wines as they get older.

This.

I don't care if someone doesn't like alcoholic beverages. Fine. However, I do not need to be told that I don't really like something that I say I like.

I do find it funny that people get almost offended if you tell them you don't like alcohol. So many of my friends (and apparently people in this thread), just can't understand it. Very weird.
The same reason peopled get annoyed if you don't celebrate some kind of late-December holiday: you're shunning one of society's rituals. Which means you're either not One Of Us (outsider), or you believe you're better than the rest of us (elitist).

Agreed

IMO anything you have to "develop" a taste for is just wasted time forcing yourself to consume something you dislike until it clicks. Why people do that with something detrimental to your health I'll never understand.
I "developed" a taste for tomatoes. I have developed a taste for a lot of things as I've gotten older. I wouldn't say tomatoes are bad for your health.

I love me the taste of some ice cold cocktails or certain beers. They taste even better when lounging on a beach in the Caribbean.

I love bitter things. Most adults love bitter things. Most children do not love bitter things.

Examples of bitter things that I love, that most adults love and mist children do not love: brussels sprouts, asparagus, arugula, COFFEE, tea, dill, artichokes, kale, saffron, tumeric, dark chocolate, some mushrooms

Also, I like sweet things too, but only in moderation.

Sour things are a favorite too, i LOVE LOVE LOVE a good Oude Geuze more than most.

Furthermore, salty can be good, in moderation, as too much salt makes me thirsty, but a bit of salt on my steak is great, also I very much enjoy a salty sour gose.

In any case, Alcohol itself is not bitter, the bitterness in beer comes from the Hops.

Some adults like bitter things, not most. Many people do not like the taste of black coffee because of the bitter flavor. That's why there is milk, sugar, and creamer to give it a pleasant taste. The bitter taste of beer is exactly why its not my favorite. Give me a redds apple ale or woodchuck cider any day but regular beer or that crap called Samuel Adams can go in the trash.

I personally can't stand the taste of beer and wine - essentially across the board. Except Guinness. I can drink a draft Guinness. But I get why other people may like those flavor profiles.

A good mixed drink is where it's at. If you don't like whiskey/bourbons straight, then have an Old Fashioned. It's delicious. There are so many options. When I go out I mix it up with Old Fashioneds, Jack and Coke and a Margarita if they make them well. And all those are delicious.

I've got to say, probably the first time I've agreed with every word of your post.

I don't like beer, can drink if only thing available. I can drink wine, again not my favorite. I never really even drank it until I lived in Italy for several months, kinda have to over there. My wife on the other hand loves beer, especially ciders. And wine. Doesn't drink liquor very much, shots of Patron is about it. If she does, it'll be Crown and sprite. She always mixes dark liquor with light pop.

I prefer my liquor straight. I used to mix pop, but rarely do anymore. Henny is my favorite, but any dark liquor is pretty good. Jack, Johnnie, Makers, etc. Higher end the better obviously. Old fashions made well are pretty damn good. I don't get fruity cocktails much, but like others have said when around water/beach I can do them.

Got these last night, we celebrated a little. Good dinner and stopped on the way home. The OP is wrong, but that's his opinion.

None of those things even come close to the bitterness of even mild hops for me. I've yet to find an alcohol which doesn't taste like the very worst of medicines.

yeah, i don't find brussel sprouts bitter at all, or asparagus, tea, or artichokes either.

i tasted 1 sip of alcohol when i was 5 or 6 years old

and that was enough to last a lifetime for me. so disgusting x_x

This is how I got turned off to cigarettes too. Parent's, do the right thing and let them try it young when they are impressionable. Then they're well on their way to hating it forever.

Beer tastes like fizzy peepee.
Wine is good.
Liquor can add a special flavor to any drink when mixed right.

Just like Vanilla extract...too much and it tastes awful. Just enough and it's lovely.

That's sort of like saying Sprite tastes like Pepsi. Beers have a huge range of flavor profiles. If your only experience is with room temp cheap ass lagers, I can understand. Those do taste like sweaty ball sacs.

That's why bourbon is only 45%-55% alcohol. The rest of it is flavored with charred oak barrel and unicorn tears. Which taste awesome.

No, you have it all wrong. It isn't unicorn tears, it's unicorn piss. Vodka is flavored with unicorn tears.

OP needs to learn how flavors better greater when mixed.

Take pure chocolate. GROSS AS FUCK. It's bitter, nasty, and just something most people wouldn't eat. Add some sugar to it and it gets good. Add some milk or other flavors and it can be divine literally.

Things with a strong bitter, acrid, or savory flavor tend to need a counter balance to them for most human consumption. Doing so properly and you'll get some of the best tasting things in the world.

That being said, drinking an 80% or higher liquor and liking it takes some getting used to. I personally like some whiskey's and tequilas straight up as a shot or a sipping drink now. Are they strong flavored and not for everyone? sure. did it take many years to get to like it? sure. But I do like them on occasion.

Bitterness is not a binary condition. It's a sliding scale.
I am not suggesting that everybody should love Quadruple IPAs, however, I am suggesting that most adults do grow to love at least some level of bitterness, balanced against other flavor characteristics of course.

When you are a kid, you like sweet flavors, or very mild flavors with bitterness to be null/zero/nonexistant. My understanding is that it's survival mechanism to prevent babies from eating dangerous/bad things.
As you grow up, your palette expands, you begin to like other things once you recognize that they are not going to make you sick.

i think they gave me a sip of PBR

Oh good heavens, son! No wonder you're jaded! Go to a bar/pub/restaurant that has a wide selection of premium micro-brews on tap. See if they'll serve you a flight - several different beers of 3-4 ounces or so. There is such a variety out there; you might be surprised at what you like. The flavor profiles are vast.

Or the people who don't wish to celebrate said holiday doing their best to get it out of the public, resulting in sterile 'winter parties' at schools, people feeling nearly scared to say Merry Christmas at stores. For the record, I don't care what people do or don't do with Christmas, et al; but if you don't wish to celebrate, don't fuss with people that do.

The same reason peopled get annoyed if you don't celebrate some kind of late-December holiday: you're shunning one of society's rituals. Which means you're either not One Of Us (outsider), or you believe you're better than the rest of us (elitist).

This. I don't drink higher end bourbon because I wanna get drunk. Sure, the buzz is nice, but I drink it because it tastes so damned good.

Same for good Scotch or Cognac along with a nice cigar. Very refined. The good stuff is meant to be savored.

What's funny is the first time I tried a beer I couldn't stand it. Thought it was gross as hell. Told myself I wouldn't ever enjoy drinking for the taste of it. All it took was a couple nights out at a bar with a few pretty ladies drinking and myself casually drinking whatever was handed to me and my sense of taste started to adapt.
