I don't believe anybody really enjoys the flavor of alcohol

Beer is fucking delicious, or can be, same with a good red wine. Also love bourbon and campari. These are all alcohols with flavours I love.

Good barrel or cask strength whisky is amazing. I've worked my way up to drinking 60%+ whiskies neat, with 68% (This year's Elijah Craig Barrel Strength) being the top so far. I'm looking forward to finding a release of something that is over 70%. (Next year's George T. Stagg, maybe).

The same reason peopled get annoyed if you don't celebrate some kind of late-December holiday: you're shunning one of society's rituals. Which means you're either not One Of Us (outsider), or you believe you're better than the rest of us (elitist).
Why can't it be both?

I have a milk chocolate peanut butter stout I'm going to go try. I like the idea of beer, people seem to put a lot of craftsmanship and love into it. I generally like the stronger stouts more, but they still taste really bitter and astringent. I typically do taste a little of the intended flavor in those though.

You can crave ethanol like you can crave sugar.

A cold beer when you need sugar is nice.

The thing is the average person is completely overloaded with sugar anyway. Give up sugary candy, drinks, and food for awhile and see how it tastes then.

The other thing about ethanol is that it can carry flavors in a way that watery type foods just can't be imbued with.

Interesting. I'm like that with soda. I told the doctor, and I was dead serious, that I'd give up sex forever if I could drink soda with no health effects. He thought I was crazy. I'm usually more inclined to have a beer when I'm stressed out.

Canadian - turpentine with a hint of lighter fluid
Irish - never had it
Scotch - ear wax dissolved in WD-40
Bourbon - feathers and grated tire rubber boiled in xylene
Rye - fermented pencil erasers

I disagree.

Canadian: dishsoap
Irish: another brand of dishsoap
Scotch: tobacco, wood, and manliness
Bourbon: Wood, wood, more wood, some burning, and a little more wood.
Rye: shitty bread.

I find alcohol itself has an interesting "kick" to it that adds to a drink, but yeah if you were to drink it pure you may as well be drinking paint thinner.

First alcoholic beverage I ever tried was Crown Royal at my high school grad. Woooo, that was an interesting flavour lol. Now days I enjoy wine more than anything as far as alcoholic drinks go. I don't really drink a lot, and never get drunk.

Pre-mixed 64 ounces of Old Fashioned made with rye whiskey, Bittercube Corazon bitters, Fee Bros Whiskey barrel aged bitters, and simple syrup for NYE.

Damn, I'm glad I forced myself to like this.

Really? Maybe if you're only spending 30-40 a bottle. Drop some ATOT money on a bottle of scotch and get back to us.

I saw an article yesterday that mentioned the most expensive scotch sold in Oregon liquor stores. 50 year old Macallan for around 9k. As soon as I win the powerball....

I thought I had too but I could not find it so I made another.

Hey how would you guys characterize the flavor profile of different whiskeys?

Canadian
Irish
Scotch
Bourbon
Rye

Most Canadian whiskey is just very...boring. It's good for mixing only. It's usually smooth but of no interesting flavor.
Irish is a less smooth Canadian.
Cheap bourbon is a less smooth, sugary Irish.
Jack Daniels is a less smooth bourbon.

Scotch, bourbon and rye get very tricky as their flavors and profiles go all over the place depending on age, techniques and barreling. Scotch can be somewhat uninteresting yet smooth as warm butter in something like an 18 year Macallan. It won't punch you in the face with a bunch of different things going on. It's just a velvet hammer of smooth warm yummy. But then you pick up something like Lagavulin and the smokey, peaty punch that comes with it and it's an entirely different experience.

Bourbon is similar in that it goes all over the place in flavor and smoothness. Some are sweet. Some are burning. Some are cinnamon and clove. Some are butterscotch. And from bottle to bottle it can change depending on year and selection. A woodford double oak is a like a well aged Macallan. Old Crow Distillery does stuff that has the smokey/peaty notes of a scotch. Bookers is like an aereosolized explosion of cinnamon, burning, vanilla and oak. It's really hard to compare from one to another.

Rye tends to be drier and less sweet than bourbon. And it's got a spicy bite to it that is very different than bourbon. It's what makes it a great mixer for cocktails when you don't want a sugar bomb drink. A manhattan with a good spicy rye and a luxardo cherry is heavenly.

The twelve year Macallan double cask has a lot of the complexity of their more well aged bottles, for much less. My current go-to.

Agreed with the Woodford. Their normal stuff is a little sweet for me, but the double oak is perfect.

Yeah double cask stuff is usually very interesting. Balvenie Double Wood is my go-to for interesting scotch's at the $50'ish range. Get that oak & sherry combo there that gives it really bright, funky vibe.

If you want a really crazy bourbon that is cask strength and drinks like a scotch, check out OCD #5. That stuff is wild.
