Damn, that is right on. I couldn't agree more. I honestly feel like my 4S is plenty powerful, I just wish it lasted longer and was a bit more open (although the jailbreak helps quite a bit). I think the race to have more cores and more speed often times sacrifices things like better battery life. I don't need a thinner, prettier, faster phone. I need a phone that can go from morning till evening without me searching for a place to recharge it.

My old 4 would go 2 days on a charge easy. Now with a 5, I'll unplug it say on a friday morning and then not plug it back in until saturday evening and it will still have double digits on the battery percentage. What are you doing to your poor phone that you cant go half a day without looking for a charger? With the 4 in the same scenario I wouldn't be looking for a charger until at least Saturday afternoon sometime.

Granted I'm not on my phone watching videos or surfing, i use an ipad or my macbook for that, but you also cant EXPECT a battery to last even a full day if you are stapled to your phone and turning it on every 5 minutes to check facebook, twitter and the like. I know a guy with an Android phone that literally carries two batteries and a cradle with him everywhere because his battery dies every 5 hours. I think the iPhone line has always done pretty well.

heavy GPS usage and streaming radio when your signal isn't too great drains the battery pretty quickly.

under normal use though it is fine for well over a day.

I'm not doing anything that heavy honestly. I mainly use my phone as an expensive iPod during the day (screen off) along with a few calls and text messages. I very rarely check any status while I am at work. I am damned lucky if I can make it through the day without having to charge the phone. I felt like my original 4S had better battery life than this one did, but it was such a PITA to get my replacement activated that I never felt like sending this one back. Maybe I just got two defective phones, who knows.

I have the GS3 and after rooting and installing a custom rom without all the bs Verizon shit on there I enjoy it much more so than my brothers Iphone 5.

Before I might have swayed towards the 5 but it would have been an expensive hit to change over.

Ignoring the screen size for the moment (since some people love the bigger screen), that's the main problem with the Galaxy S III unfortunately, IMO.

Yea the bloat was slowing her down, nova 3 played horribly until I rooted. I wish these companies would just ship all android devices with stock jelly bean. Apple owns on 2 fronts namely apps and ease of use, Apple being forceful with no modifications is a plus/minus depending on who you are.

Any difference in usage between work and off days? Im wondering if maybe your service is just a little weaker at your workplace? My wife had this happen, her building would still allow her to get signal, but the phone had to work twice as hard to maintain that communication, even while asleep for e mail and other notifications, which drained her battery incredibly fast compared to being out of the building and getting a fuller signal. If you mostly use it for an iPod (assuming the music is local and not streaming, because if its streaming, theres your problem), try putting it in airplane mode for a day and see if there is a drastic difference in usage. If it is drastic, it might just be your reception at your workplace.

I pretty much figured it was my phone having to go into higher power mode due to signal issues as well. I will see if my battery life is better at home (but I tend to not use the phone as much on those days). At home I am always connected to either my wireless network for data or my wireless extender for calls, so battery drain due to signal issues should be about zero in that case. It is a good suggestion, I'll see if it makes a difference.

The 3G speed on Verizon was absolutely horrible for me so going from the 4 to 5 was a no brainer.

I had to pay full price for it in order to keep the unlimited data plan. I also added the $30/month unlimited tethering. I won't be able to go back to an inferior phone, ever.

Over the long term, if you are going to pay full price for your phones, you really shouldn't buy them brand new from Apple or the carriers if you want to really save money. I'd say shift the time you buy your phones by about 3-4 months and get a brand new unit off of eBay and you should save a good $100-150 easy.

I don't get the math of buying a phone for full price.

If you buy a phone for $199 with a 2 year contract, paying $X a month for service, you pay $Y over 24 months.

If you buy a phone for $600-$800 without a 2 year contract, paying $X a month for service, don't you pay more than $Y over 24 months?

I visited an apple store today. My fiancé wanted to check out the new iPhone since she is going to be getting it soon. She recently cracked her iPhone 4 screen.

I have to say, this is the best iPhone I have held. It was lightweight and felt nice in my hand. The phone was fast as well. It is a good phone and I can see it being popular. However, it is not the phone for me. There are two reasons. Screen size and Swype. The iPhone keyboard is way too small for my usage. Secondly, I love Swype. I type way to much to press every letter. If apple had both of those, the iPhone would be a serious contender for my next phone.

Also, the moment I saw the aluminum back I knew it would be a scratch magnet, but that wouldn't bother me. Scratches on the screen bother me.

Another side note, it kinda reminded me of my old Motorola slvr in terms of how it felt in my hand.

4S drains battery faster than 4 on average thanks to the A5 chip and the upgraded cellular antenna.

I have yet to pick up a 5, but that was how it was when I had a 4S. The phone was gone from my inventory in less than a month since I couldn't bear the significantly reduced battery life. Plus it was heating up more often.

Don't worry about scratches on both the glass and aluminum back. The glass is even more scratch resistant than the 4/4s. In regards to the back, watch that video where they take a knife to it and cut along the surface. It initially left marks, but all wiped off. The only worry is the chamfered edge. That area unfortunately is susceptible to damage. Also the Apple logo can get scratched up.

Oh, I know. Plus my fiancé puts a case on her phone. I have my phone naked. I have a galaxy s2 and there are no scratches on the screen. I put it in my left pocket and it is on my desk/nightstand at home. I just have a crack in the plastic on the lower left hand corner from when I dropped it. If I did get an iPhone 5 I would treat it the same as my gs2. I hate cases .

He had to buy the phone outright to keep the unlimited data plan. As for me, my contract is until Dec 2013 so any new phone I buy will be outright unless I can manage to stick with my current phone until then. This is my current phone haha:

That still does not answer my question.

(When you buy a new iPhone and sign a new 2 year contract, you lose unlimited? Also, when does throttling kick in?)

For those (like myself) who have the old unlimited data on Verizon, you can't use an upgrade or it will end your unlimited, you have to buy it non-subsidized.

Unlimited data is the most valuable thing about my phone+plan.

How much do you pay for data per month?
How much data do you use in a month (before you get throttled)?
How much would a limited plan of that amount cost you per month?

Att+Apple are already starting to put restrictions on how you use you're unlimited data usage, from outright restricting apps and throttling you down once you hit the 2GB mark.

My guess is that soon ATT will start increasing the data cap on standard data plans in order to account for increased demand due to LTE, but simply keep holding unlimited plans at 2GB throttled. One way or another those people are going to start switching over lol.

Yes, if you stay with your big provider after doing so. But, the appeal of buying a phone outright is so you can switch to a carrier that charges less. Verizon and ATT typically are in the range of $100 a month for the most data, etc. The other carriers charge about $50 a month for "truly unlimited". So you are getting roughly the same service for half the price, over the course of 24 months you save $1200 in SERVICE charges, MORE than offsetting $600 - $800 on the cost of the phone (especially since you would have had to pay $200 anyway). So it's $200 for the phone + $2400 in service with Verizon/ATT = $2800 for phone and service for 2 years. With the other guys, its $600 for phone + $1200 for service = $1800, the idea is saving the $1000 over the course of the two years period. Another plus is if you see rates and coverage with another third party provider that are more attractive, you aren't in contract and can switch anytime during that 2 years. With the big guys, you are locked in.

The trade off that I have seen is some of the smaller guys that you pay less for, have less coverage outside of metropolitan areas. But if the coverage you do get, works for you, the money savings is worthit.

AT&T is $30/mo (or $360/year) for 3GB (Each GB over that is $10 mo. I believe).

I seemingly use a butt-load of data and rarely go over 2GB a month.

I still do not see how the math works out for paying full price for a phone, especially for those who do it and use Verizon or AT&T or just to keep "unlimited" data.

For those who buy the phone outright, the cost of unlimited data is worth it even though it costs more monthly or the even the use of lte on Verizon is worth it
