It's like the same damn show as the Sopranos. It's popular for the same reasons, anyway. Well written, interestingly paced, and starring an exceptionally flawed, basically irredeemable character who's portrayed as the coolest man in the room. Kind of the anti-"cheaters never prosper/winners don't use drugs" message. It takes a lifestyle most people can't really identify with and presents it flawlessly.

And this is as good a place as any to admit it: I kind of like Pete Campbell's character.

edit: and also, this is important: Joan looks like the type of silhouette a horny 11 year old would draw. Can you imagine what her measurements must be? Even taking into account the ridiculous corset or whatever she must be wearing, Christina Hendrick's cup size is above an E, whatever it is. I would destroy that woman.

Kinda. I was kinda hoping for some plot twists though. None happened in this episode and I guess that is what you should expect.

WHAT?????? Are you friggin' kidding me?

[SPOILERS]

1) Don giving a Peggy a tongue lashing for trying to squeeze him on the Hilton account which leads too...
2) Peggy and Duck.
3) Burt holding one over on Don with the Dick Whitman debacle and forcing him to sign a contract.
4) Don getting robbed by a couple of hitchhikers.
5) Don's dad coming back into the picture while under the influence.
6) Betty getting involved with the kreepy pregnant stomach rubber.
7) Don breaking ties with Roger.

Did you even watch last night's episode?????

edit: and I watched episode 6 where the Brit gets lawn mower'd, HOLY SHIT. They fire him knowing he's a prodigy just because his foot got mower'd off? Clearly they've never heard of a walking stick...hell, soldiers in WW1 that had amputations were given fake limbs (very crude), why 40 years later can't this guy get one?

I saw it all coming though... How exactly is peggy and duck a plot twist when you see it in the beginning of the episode? Same for Don being jacked by the two people... I knew it soon as he picked them up.

Nothing really surprising when you know it is all comin'. The only thing that was not something I would have imagined was Don hallucinating.

Last two episodes were quite excellent I must say. Don didn't earn any sympathy points from his exploits last episode.

I do too, I think that's one of the things about his character, in the beginning he was just a whiny bitch, but then you see more of his background and realize everyone in that family are a bunch of smug bitches who have no reason to be.

But then he got more happy I think, or he's playing the game a lot better. I sympathize a lot with his character, and he does have a hot wife, if I'm honest.

Do you even know what a plot twist is?
Everything NFS4 mentioned has huge implications for the rest of the season. Just because they foreshadowed it and you guessed it half way through the episode doesn't mean it doesn't drastically change multiple relationships in the show.

Each development also affected the other developments, all through Don.

Don gets handed contract, Sterling pressures him, he releases on Peggy (thus Peggy nails Duck). Betty meets with Governor's advisor, which gives her the balls to confront Don after Sterling calls (about the contract again) - this confrontation leads to his joyride to roofie-land which makes him realize he's not going to be able to control every aspect of his life, further exemplified by Cooper bitchsmacking him in the office (a twist you completely missed)

I understand if you don't like the show or don't care enough about the characters but don't come in here and talk like you're so much smarter than the show and how it doesn't impress you. Try thinking about it more.

The show is a beautiful goddamn tapestry.

I loved the episode a few seasons back where Roger Stirling spends the day guzzling booze, tops that off with some fresh oysters, then determinedly climbs the stairs to the top floor of a skyscraper (lifts are broken) only to vomit all over the carpet.

The best part about this was that Don set it up.
Earlier in the episode before going out to lunch you see him talk to Hollis (the elevator operator) but you don't see what he says, just that he's reaching for some bills.

Later on the elevator is mysteriously out, coincidence? No way.
Don Draper is that damn good.

yeah, Don came across like a real asshole in his confrontation with Peggy, imo... a big client comes into the firm and Peggy put herself out there to make it known she had an interest in working with the client. isn't that what you're supposed to do? to me at least, Peggy didn't come across as saying "omg, give this to me" like Don accused her of.

Shit, I never watched that either. WTF, why would Don want to humiliate Sterling? I thought they were friends?

OK, OP here - saw Sunday's episode last night and actually found it quite good ... I guess I like the show when its dark and reveals the leads moral ambiguity, don't really like it when it's about pop culture of the time

This is the same episode where Sterling made a pass at Betty in the kitchen after he invites himself over to dinner. Earlier in the episode Don and Sterling are at a bar and Don gets all the looks from the two cute girls at the other end of the bar (Don walks to the phone and they both turn and look, leaving Roger to stew with his Martini)

I think it was that reaction from the women that causes him to make a pass at Betty, then attempt to prove his youth with the oysters and martinis and the stair climbing.

Here's a pic of the aftermath: http://www.reeejumon.com/dongrin.jpg

I believe the scene with Hollis occurs right after Trudy Campbell berates Pete for exchanging the chip and dip for a .22 - he comes out of the elevator looking sad and Don walks in and says 'hey Hollis let me ask you a question' while pulling out some cash. Door closes, cut to next scene (I think at the restaurant)

If you can't tell, I really love this show. I think I've watched it at least 3 times through for each episode and each time there's something different there.

Uhhhh, one of his conditions with Bertram Cooper for finally signing his contract was "no further contact with Roger Sterling."

But at that point in the series, they were still somewhat cordial.

Haha, yea that was awesome.

One of my favorite scenes was during a picnic Don was having with his family, when they got up to go, they just left all their fucking trash out, didn't throw anything away, just left it all there and walked away.

I've enjoyed watching Betty gulp down glass after glass of wine despite her being pregnant. She's constantly puffing on a cigarette, too. and then you have the 11 yr old daughter driving the car down the road practically unassisted (taking a driving lesson from the demented gramps). I guess a lot of the concerns we have today just didn't register back then.

I miss grandpa. They killed him off way too early. A crusty nutball old man like that was just what this show needs. Though I guess Sterling and Cooper can fill those gaps to some degree.
