They may in fact be quite close to Haswell in various DC applications, except in ones which use AVX heavily (PrimeGrid LLR).

I just received from Amazon a very early Christmas present for my 19yo daughter: Yamaha receiver and Polk Monitor 45B dual 5.25" bookshelf speakers, and I am 'breaking in' the speakers in the next room with the Eagles Greatest hits and some Floyd. My neighbors must be displeased, as my mouse is jumping around on the desk on it's own. She's gonna love this, and her mother will not.

I wanted to find a motherboard with adequate spacing to be able to orient the HSFs to blow upward instead of through each other. The Supermicro has that wide spacing, although it does have the narrow rectangular HSF mount spacing, which required some HSF mount mods to make them work.

If that board would work, would it work in a Rosewill Blackhawk case? I've also got a Chenming full tower if it would fit in that one.

That might be an interesting idea, rather than sourcing all of the parts and building it yourself, pick up a couple of those workstations, and run them separately.

No, not at all. There's a definite divide between LGA 2011 and LGA 2011-3. That was my earlier conundrum, I wanted to have the upgrade capability, but since 2011-3 is still a currently used socket for Broadwell-E, CPU prices are remaining high. That's why I had to settle for the older socket, because the Ivy Bridge-EP CPUs have become too good a value to pass up at this point in time. Hopefully the introduction of Skylake-SP will see the prices of LGA 2011-3 come down enough to be affordable for budget DC projects,

I think part of the reason is the migration to DDR4, but I don't know enough to be sure.

True! But I've already impulsively purchased it! The plan is to have it take the place of two dual core machines; hopefully the net power draw will not be much different.

Well, the memory Rudy Toody gave me is not recognized at all by the Intel X79 board, but the good news is I've been able to mix and match, one of my Haswell systems liked it just fine. So the X79 is alive, though not with all 4 memory channels.

I know, right? I love my Klipsch Reference-series bookshelf speakers, and for when I need to be "quiet", I have my Audio Technica ATH-R70x Open-back headphones. If I'm going to listen to music, it needs to sound good.

As for back on topic, it's been a few months since I've checked in... and this thread made me want to pick up a Xeon E5-2680 v4 or similar to upgrade my E5-2620v4... or a Core i7 6900X... but then Skylake-X was released... and now I have another new system.... damnit guys. I'm supposed to be saving money but then I see shiny computers with 20C/40T and then boom. New computer parts at my door.

And no, LGA 2011-3 (Socket R3) processors will not work in LGA 2011 (Socket R). The keys are slightly different to prevent backwards compatibility due to the actual pin-out changing (not the physical layout, but the signalling). Socket R will work for the *Bridge processors and Socket R3 will work with the *well processors only.

What I'm kinda bummed about is that HDET has diverged from enterprise (for now) so I can't get any Xeon processors at the moment for the X299 platform... not that I need one.

So, with 73 (seventy-three) BOINC clients running here (on 170C/340T in 10 sockets), you bet that I don't need another system, or at least not urgently. But what I needed was a new router. The old one which I had for many years now had trained me to power-cycle it now and then when it got stuck from too much traffic. Previously this was rare. But now with all those clients uploading and downloading and, especially, begging Leiden University periodically for more work, the router began to need a power cycle every other hour or so.

So, I realized today that enough is enough, browsed a few online reviews, made a shortlist of possibly stable routers, went to town, and found one. Put it in place, and so far it holds up as expected. What a relief.

As hinted, it was purchased with little research, and importantly, without patience for an online order. I.e. I restricted myself to what I could find here in a store. It's an Asus RT-AC87U.

So far I use only a tiny fraction of the router features. But for what I bought it, it performed without issue, i.e. the traffic from 6 hosts with the mentioned 73 BOINC clients which I ran last week, and as a test a bunch of torrents too, besides web browser and radio stream. The control U/I has got a CPU and RAM utilization graph which is always pretty low --- I should figure out how to install BOINC on it to make better use of all this untapped hardware.

What I don't like too much: It's a bit big, it draws some power, it only has 4 GbE ports (which I use mainly; wireless only at rare occasions). There was no 8 port device in stock in town.

I'm not really interested in networking tech, which is why I went for a consumer oriented device instead of something semi-professional or professional. It replaces an equally consumer-level, but older and much lower-performing D-Link DI-604. (This is at home, not at the workplace.)

now that I write this post, I also browsed Newegg for customer reviews of the Asus RT-AC87U. A rather horrible picture is painted there, entirely unlike the German customer reviews which I took as guidance last week. Apparently this thing works much better east of the Atlantic than west.
