I would never spend a fortune on my bag when knock offs are so cheap and suit the same purpose. But then again, I also feel secure enough that I do not require items solely for their brand name just for the sake of bragging rights. You can't buy social status. The faux status you can buy puts you in company no person secure about themselves would ever care to keep. But then again, I'm talking about my own money.

If she has decided to treat your money like "free money", then yes she will treat any purchases made with it frivolously. Never mind an expensive bag, don't bother to buy another one at all. Once she gifts away the one she was given, let it be on her to find herself a replacement on her own income. If she asks for another, just point out you got her one already. What she did with it was her business.

or well i'm going to assume your girlfriend is chinese since she's going to visit a cousin in hk.

i've noticed this whole expensive ass car / purse thing with chinese people but i guess it applies to people as a whole but certain foriegn countries in particular. its a totally bizarre cultural thing.

like i have friends who buy lexuses and then don't drive them and drive some cheaper older car to work keep their $1000 LV purses in a closet to keep them "nice". so its just a status thing. except with purses its worse since at least with say a new car or a new phone you usually get a functional difference. with purses i dont think you get anything at all other than the status

but yeah, hard to find people who aren't as into that these days. anyway i would hope she grows out of it , given she's still in college. and i have to say the fakes or just less expensive non heavily marketed purses im sure work just as well.


i do have to say i was in vegas once and won some money in the venetian where they have that mall and bought a $300 burberry wallet with some of my winnings. figured i wanted to see what this brand name thing was all about. its easily the most expensive wallet i've ever owned. anyway i still have said wallet, but its probably the worst built one i've ever owned. like within a few months the stitching on the edges and some of the leather around it was wearing down. so you dont even really get quality for your ridiculous amount of money sometimes.

True to a limit. $1200 purse? NEVER. $300 instead of a $40 kmart? Seems reasonable. My gf has used two purses that were $300 each for the past 5 years... not that expensive in the long run.

I've used the same $20 wallet for the past 5 years. A bag is a little bigger, so maybe $100 would be acceptable. I paid $20 for my laptop bag. If I had self esteem issues, I would insist on paying $1300 for a bag.
