True to a limit. $1200 purse? NEVER. $300 instead of a $40 kmart? Seems reasonable. My gf has used two purses that were $300 each for the past 5 years... not that expensive in the long run.

And my wife has 5-10 $30-50 purses for over 10 years....

The nice thing about some people is that when they give expensive gifts; usually they will receive expensive gifts in return. Hopefully its usually than rarely.

And what's the name for that status?

Sometimes?

More you pay > more they bend you over (more money they make). Quality differences are not even worth discussing as NO company is in business to make things last forever.

We live in a disposable world

well sometimes it is better.

i've had a number of belt that were say $40-50 where the leather has split and such. so i decided to just pony up $90 for a hugo boss one i liked, and it has held up a lot better than any belt i've ever owned.

that said for the wallet, it was really disappointing.

there is DEFINITELY a quality difference in a $1200 LV purse compared to a $300 coach purse compared to a $20 purse from target. to say otherwise is just being ignorant to the fact, which probably means that you've never been exposed to them.

it's also funny that people bitch about a $1200 purse and how overpriced it is yet will gladly spend that much on a pc.

My problem with LV (other than I don't buy items in that price range) is that it's F'ing treated canvas. at $300 for a bill fold, I'd expect a more durable material. I guess it doesn't matter, I'm not part of their target audience.

So am I right or wrong here?

I'd feel the same way you do. My wife gave one of my gifts to her to her brother a few months later who promptly lost it (or trashed it). Even before that the fact that she gave it to him upset me.

Another example is when I had my 10th anniversary with my company I was able to pick a gift. Instead of choosing a men's watch I got a woman's watch for her. When she thought she lost it one time she didn't understand why I was really upset about it ("it was free anyway"). I could've picked anything and kept it for myself as a memorable keepsake but instead I got her something for it. Thankfully I found it later.

a 45$ computer (raspberry Pi or whatever) doesn't play crysis, with a $1200 pc you can max the settings out.
A 50$ purse and a 1200$ purse have exactly the same functionality.

there is an on-going problem with chinese/taiwanese/hk girls.

I assume OP's gf is from hong kong, classic case of "kong lui," a term to describe a girl from hk who is materialistic.

there is another term to describe the girls in china and taiwan who are materialistic, Princess syndrome.
http://yffm.wordpress.com/2011/07/18/princess-syndrome-公主病/

OP should have NEVER bought the LV purse at the first place. The gf can buy it with her own money.

if the way things are going, better dump the gf and get a girl that's more compatible.

Lucky for me, I hate purses.

I also don't like expensive gifts. I don't understand the appeal of expensive purses. Some of them may look nice...but at the end of the day, it probably came from the same sweat shop that Walmart uses to make its cheap shit. A was most likely really cheap to make.

You're paying for a brand name.

only for a few months because I got it for her for Christmas

If she values you, she will cherish your gifts for atleast a few years. After I graduated and worked a few months, I bought my mom an $1800 LV purse and I've seen her use it maybe 2 times in 7 years, but atleast she has it and didn't give it to my sisters.

when I was in 7 th grade, my English teacher told me about how he bought his dad a bottle of old spice for Christmas every year when he was a kid. When his dad passed, he found a drawer full of unopened old spice bottles in his dad's bedroom dresser. his dad kept them even though he didn't use old spice and the bottles were long expired because they were gifts from his son.

A 50$ purse and a 1200$ purse have exactly the same functionality.

but one will last much much longer, and can be sold years down the road (if you want) for very close to the same price you purchased it for, or possibly go up in value.

also, "same functionality" is totally subjective. that rasberry pi will have the same functionality as a $1200 pc to someone who only uses facebook.

then you fall into the 2nd part of the paragraph, right after the text you bolded

Possible but doubtful. If it does, it's because of the brand name, not because of it's "fine craftsmanship" LOL

Wrong again. But you tell yourself whatever you need to sleep at night

a 1200$ purse and a $50 purse are not going to have the same material quality and workmanship.
lets talk about men's wallets since I know more about them and we can both relate.

you can get wallets for $5, $20 ish, $60-$100 ish, $200-300ish, and $500. I know there are more price ranges, but this is what I have seen most often, so we'll use these for my example.

I don't have any experience with $5 wallets but I'm gonna assume the leather ones are complete crap that last 2 or 3 years and the nylon ones last a long time. these are made in Asia in a sweat shop with vert little quality control in terms of material, dye, and workmanship. These look like a mixed bag of initial quality when I see them at street fairs.

the $20 ish dollar ones are brands you get at department stores when on sale, like Fossil. Still made in Asia by sweat shops but quality control is there for the stitching so they usually last me 8 years of daily use until they get worn out.

the $60-$100 ish wallets are the sweet spot, you get interesting materials (like stingray) or regular high quality leather that has quality workmanship in the stitching and dye. A lot of these wallets are made in First world nation's. These wallets also last about 8 years (for me).

The 200-300 $ wallets are like the 100 ish dollar wallets except the grain on the leather is completely uniform and the stitching is as well. some have fancy embossed patterns. These last me the same 8 year's as the $20 wallets, you're paying for the brand and minor details at this level. I own several $200 Longchamp wallets because I like the design (the credit cards insert sideways, not fron the top). these are made in first world nation's by skilled laborers who earn good wages like 99% of the time.

In the $500 catagory, I own a LV and I haven't used it enough to comment on the lifespan, but I doubt it will go past 8 years of daily abuse, you're just paying for the rarity at this point. Their laborers may earn a bit more than the $200 wallet workers and their QC might be slightly tighter.

So purses would be more fairly compared to liquor, a $10 bottle of vodka will get you drunk just like a $40+ bottle will, but there is a huge difference in taste and next day hangover.

I've got a $25 Tommy Hilfiger leather wallet I bought almost 14 years ago. I use it everyday. It's chock full of stuff. I've taken it all over the world with me (well India, England, road trip through a lot of Europe etc) and it's still in excellent condition.
