I don't think I'll look at sweetened tea from a restaurant in the same way again

Not to ruin anyone's appetite but wonder if anyone in the forums got injured as well as sick from food/drinks from a restaurant. Looks like an injury to me in this case with the lady being burned internally besides being poisoned by the cleaning powder/fluid. An employee mistook a toxic cleaning substance for sugar or a sweetener.

Alot of these stories turn out to be fake. My care level about any horror news story is about 0.5/10

I had TacoBell crunchy tacos that had bleach in them before. I'm guessing the bleach got in the lettuce. It was strong enough, my partner could smell it from across the table. I just ate them. Didn't feel like fooling around with a return. I'm still alive. I think...

On the subject at hand... I don't get real tea out. I don't like sweetened tea, and don't like the way most places make it. I either get soda, beer or water. Depends on where I'm at, and what my mood is.

might have just been tap water if they add chlorine in your area, when I visited New York I had coke from a fountain at McDonald's and I could taste and smell the chlorine.

Nah, this was STRONG. I'm familiar with municipal water, and this particular area has very good municipal water from ground sources. I'm guessing they were cleaning the prep area, and slopped cleaner into the containers. Lettuce is most suspect since that's the only thing on crunchy tacos aside from cheese that isn't heated.

It's not always easy to recognize food poisoning, and a lot of people will write off a mild case of it as just a bug. That said, I am pretty sure I have never gotten sick from restaurant food. The one time I am certain I had food poisoning I did it to myself.

At some point someone will invent a container of some kind that can be labeled with words. That will really help these people who are uncertain which is sugar, salt or poison.

That's optimistic. They need to bring back Mr Yuck, but who would have thought he was needed for employed adults?

Some places are really bad for that. Sometimes the water out of my taps at home smells and tastes like it was taken fresh from the pool.

As for this particular incident, it's going to be a very difficult case to defend. I mean, you'd think you'd at least smell it and realize your mistake. Also begs the question whether the container of cleaning solution was properly labelled. All hazardous materials in the work place have to be, and employees should have hazardous materials training. It should also not have been stored in close proximity to the food preparation environment.

years ago I had ordered an unsweeted Iced tea along with my burger since I generally don't like the sweetness of tea in restaurants and like to sweeten it myself, I reach for the sugar dispenser and pour a couple of teaspoons sugar and stir it and take a sip and was surprised by how it tasted, when they had refilled the sugar they had put salt and not sugar and you could see a very distinct line where the salt started above the sugar.

it just goes goes to show it can be very easy to grab the wrong thing when busy and not paying close attention.

The fight club hand scene comes into mind with the lye. This is much more diluted though. The fountain machine must've done a good job cooling it down. Mixing lye with water creates a strong exothermic reaction that would've brought the water to near boiling.
