I don't think my XFX 6600 GT is working up to snuff

I just purchased and XFX GeForce 6600 GT as an upgrade for my Ti 200 vid card. (Yes, I know) I have the AGP version.

My first glitch was when I installed the card and updated the nVidia drivers to the latest version. I opened Battlefield 1942 hoping to finally play it in its proper glory. When entering the video settings screen I was disappointed to see I could only pump the resolution to 1024x768. No 1280x1024 option, which was definitely there before I installed the new card.

I opened GTA:VC and was completely unable to even change the resolution. It was stuck on 640x480. In fact, after a reboot I couldn't even open GTA:VC any longer.

I also booted up Battlefield 2 and noticed 1024x768 was the max selectable resolution. Not that I could go over that selection with my configuration anyway.

A second issue I noticed was in my idle temperature. I am sitting at 57 C as I type and I've even seen it up to 60 C. For clarity, I'm measuring my "idle temperature" during low stress graphic situations. Typing this post for instance. Judging by this Anandtech article I would expect my card to be "idling" much, much cooler.

Does anyone out there have any specific ideas to solve my specific problem? Else does anyone have a good script to follow in order to troubleshoot the errors or get things installed without problems? Initially I just figured this was a driver issue, but with the heat of my GPU, I'm not so sure anymore. Anyone experiencing similar idle temps with this card?

Did you remove your old nVidia drivers before installing the new ones?

I'd agree with BFG10K. When I switched out my MSI 6600GT to a vanilla 6800 a while back I properly uninstalled my drivers by going to the ctrl panel and removing them there, then rebooting into safe mode and running driver cleaner etc etc. My only guess is that perhaps you did something wrong prior to installing your XFX 6600GT? Ignoring the fact that its an XFX card, i'd say your best bet would be to troubleshoot your video card.

My suggestion is format everything buy a new case remount / setup everything / reinstall windows and start again.

download drivercleaner and the current nvidia drivers and follow drivercleaner's readme.

Thanks for the drivercleaner recommendation. I'll try it out tonight.

Just wondering: Can a driver problem cause a GPU to run hot like mine is?

Hmmm...sometimes. My friend has an X850XT PE in his Dell XPS and ever since he installed the newest drivers he's been getting overheating messages while playing games. Installed the 5.6's(I think) and the problem went away...he called Dell's "tech support" and they really helped him.(j\k)
