I don't want to live a life of reliance on artificial equipment, or on others for that matter. If I cannot take care of myself in every situation, I'd feel like a worthless human being. In nature I'd die, so in life I should die.

I won't wish that upon others, and everyone has a different attitude towards life. Just explaining how I can see compu's reasoning, as it is basically the same as mine.

I understand the reasoning and understand why some people would feel that way. I'm not debating that point at all. Just saying "she's better off dead" is lacking of tact when not everyone feels that way.

Terrible.

I'm not qualified to say if this was really bad care or some exceptional condition but dam... I know that UTI's are one of the first things to check for many abdominal symptoms. If you don't know then at least tell the girl to drink some cranberry juice maybe even a broad spectrum antibiotic coarse while you wait for labs. Being who she is I would think she had access to decent care. Something seems really wrong with this level of care given but again, I can't make that evaluation. AFAIK most severe septicemia cases have very obvious symptoms.

not sure what kind of life she would have if she pulled through..both kidneys, limbs, etc...she will be in the hospital for a very very long time recovering...if she pulls through...bless her heart... I cannot even imagine how the parents must feel.... if i had to witness my daughter going through that..i do not know if I would pull through

Well when the UTI progressed to septicemia it seemed to become extremely obvious and they began 'treating' for that.
But still... isn't there some kind of treatment for septicemia? Like potent medications? Or does it tend to always result in hacking up the body?
Unless she didn't return to the hospital until a few days had passed with septicemia spreading in her blood.

Maybe better off dead was a poor choice of words. I'm putting myself into how I would feel if it were me this happened to. I honestly don't know that I would want to live and frankly, yes I would probably feel like I would be better off dead. I guess it all depends on how her attitude toward life and it's challenges will be when she recovers.

Why didn't the doctors just put her on antibiotics when she first went in? If labs come back and she ended up not having an infection, no big deal. It would be horrible if something that stupid caused something like this.

Well I have no problem in this regard, but more thorough testing should have been done.

Antibiotics have been prescribed like they are candy in this day and age, at least here in the US. And it's terrible, because I imagine it is making our bodies more susceptible to nastier bugs, especially if you take an antibiotic when you have nothing for the meds to even try and kill off.

As far as I know, and like I said I am no expert, septicemia requires immediate emergency treatment. Usually ICU monitoring with IV antibiotics, possibly anticoagulants and plasma, and oxygen. Septicemia can cover a broad range of pathogenic bacteria so it depends on the type of bacteria and conditions.

Definitely more testing was called for, but her symptoms sound like they warranted at least some precautionary antibiotics. Besides, I think most of the resistant stuff comes from people who don't finish their prescriptions, or even antibiotics given to farm animals.
