It still must move more than a tripod though.... For instance, at 300mm, would a monopod be still enough to take a decent shot?

Well im wondering for travel if i would be better suited with a simple monopod or a cheap ultralight tripod like this one; http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16830996602

I'd buy a nice monopod before a cheap tripod. Would you really use a tripod much for travel? It depends on what you're doing I guess, but there are lots of places where you wouldn't take a tripod, or even not get in certain places at all with it. You really don't want to cheap out on a tripod.

I was out mountain hiking in Alaska last month, the monopod definitely came in handy, especially in the steep terrain areas where setting up a tripod and making it level would be a pain in itself. Plus, at 300mm, or even 430mm (on my Lumix FZ20), a monopod is all you need if you have an optical stabilizer. I doubt using a tripod would give you much more clarity if you already have the OIS built-in. And like stated above, they weigh a fraction of the weight of a tripod, plus can be strung easily on your bag.
