For the same reason people lined up around the block for the original iphone, which was a poor excuse for a "smartphone" at best. The average Joe consumer doesn't want all the capabilities of Android, and would rather download flashy-looking apps with shiny-looking icons, or games which involve swiping your finger back and forth like a madman, and be sure to show off his toy to fellow hipsters.

WinMo and BBs at the time were a poor excuse of a smartphone. I still have nightmares about them.

That depends what you want a smartphone to do. If the smartphone doesn't have a file manager, copy/paste, or even allowing to customize ringtones and notifications, it's a crappy smartphone in my book.

Come to think of it, I've almost never seen an Android ad, or even a Google ad. I saw the Queen Galaxy Nexus ad a sumtotal of one time.

For Android phones it's marketed like crazy. I remember a few superbowls ago when Droid first dropped it was a "Droid Does" ad every other break it seemed like. Now you have Samsung, HTC and and Motorola marketing the crap out of their stuff. Whenever Verizon does their radio adds it's alway an Android phone they are pimping.

As far as tablets go the only Android tab I've ever seen marketed is the original Xoom when it was released. And we know how much of an overpriced clunker than thing was.

I guess it depends what you want to do.
For me, it's email, web browsing, reading ebooks, and tethered navigation, so my $150 CM7 Touchpad does the job. Could $500 iPad do those better? Let's see, $350 more, no Flash (if you don't care, fine, I do), and no free Navigation app. So in my case, iPad would not be replacing thousands of dollars of studio equipment, it would be replacing a $150 device with a $500 one with less of the functionality that I want.

I guess it also depends on one's ability to root and install a buggy, unfinished android port, and also to travel back in time and still have to beat back the rush to order and receive a touchpad.

Yes, the touchpad was a great deal. But for the portion of the population that does not have the time to fiddle with CM, nor access to a time machine, the touchpad is irrelevant

Sour grapes much? Too bad that the only socially-acceptable customizations for the 2012 iFan crowd are those that come from Apple and cost $4.99. My old dumbphones had more customizations than your Gen1 iphone.

Why are you even in this thread? Go to phandroid.com to hate on the iPhone. This is about the tablet market and how android has failed to grab a foothold in the market. Get back on subject

~38% seems like a pretty decent foothold to me, especially considering that they started at 0%. It's only going to increase.

Acer had Iconia A500s for as low as $230, and that has official Android 3.2 preinstalled. Even if you didn't get TP, you could get an Android tablet for half of what an iPad cost. It depends what you want though. If you want iPad apps, you gotta get it. If you mainly want email and internet, pretty much anything with a web browser will do.

And other than the people who peruse these forums who the hell ever heard of acer? This is the problem Android is having. Many good products run my schmucks who just want to make a quick buck. They need good advertisments. Shit, I hate apple with a passion but they have slick advertising. The only company heavily advertising anything android is verizon and they are doing a shitty job at that. Freaking robots and retarded laser shit. Man, I wish I was in the ad agency business. I would make a fortune.

This. So much this. Android commercials are HORRIBLE. Why don't they just make a commercial highlighting the features? It would help soooo much. Quit making stupid flashy ads telling nothing about the product. Just tell us about the product!

The main problem is that, while Apple can subsidize the price of an iPad via selling software in iTunes, Android manufacturers are stuck with only selling hardware. Hence, they have to maximize profit from only hardware and not from services such as software or other things. That is why their products are the same or more expensive than an iPad while usually offering less.

That would be nice, except they don't subsidize the price. The BOM of an iPad has been pretty public for a long time. They aren't selling them at a loss.

Ummmm, Acer has been a major brand name PC maker filling a large portion of the shelves at Best Buy for well over a decade.

Edit: Hell, almost two decades, remembering back to when I bought my first new PC in '95.

Also, my second monitor sitting next to me at work is an Acer. I bet a lot of people have Acer equipment either at work or home.

I know. What's your point? It was a minor company over a decade ago and it still is. Its right up there with Dynex. Again, what's your point? Most people never heard of it and most serious gear-heads would never buy it.

When you have something to say that isn't copied and pasted from Apple press releases, come back to the conversation.

And you get back to me with info on an Android tablet that'll let me hook my XLR studio mic and midi keyboards up. Oh, and can run XBMC.

Apple was a minor company a decade ago too.

And what "serious gear-head" wants to live under Apple's thumb, installing only those applications personally blessed by Jobs himself? Gear heads want a phone/tablet they can modify.

Try to keep your arguments straight, you're all over the place. You Apple fanboys truly live in your own world, don't you?

Wait, so your iPad has an XLR port? What model is that?

Oh, you have a breakout box for it.

Well many Android tablets have USB ports, you know, that nearly universal port that everyone supports unlike Apple unless you buy their proprietary USB port adapter.

So what's your claim here?

A gear head would be the type to, oh I dunno um JAILBREAK a device right? If you JB iOS you can modify it till your hearts content.

No it's a dock with balanced inputs, XLR and some othet stuff, but it's something you couldn't buy for an Android device even if you wanted to. I said you can do more with iOS, which is 100% factually true.
