I can't take it anymore scavenging for low skill jobs with split shifts and constantly changing hours all for a pittance in pay and no hope for a better future. Though I am at the ripe old age of 32, which is admittedly pretty late in life to be doing this sort of thing, I still need to see this through. I'm starting over in pursuit of a skill that's actually worth a damn.

I'm gonna be a registered nurse!

You are still plenty young. My MIL went to nursing school in her mid 50's after being laid off as a secretary in 2009. Now she has no problem finding decent paying jobs. I think she is a LVN.

Seventeen years of high school must have been rough. Congrats on getting your diploma.

I couldn't even begin to count the number of people I know who've gotten nursing degrees in their late 20s to early 40s. It's quite a few. I think that's increasingly common today. It's probably not a career that's attractive to the average 18 or 19 year old, but becomes more attractive as they get older and end up stuck in dead-end careers, or with no career at all.

Congratulations on going back to school and when you're done you'll find that it was worth the cost. With our nation descending deeper into the service job abyss, 77% of all jobs are service sector now, having an education is more important than ever.

Wait are you female or male? Message me. I always thought you female because of your avatar. Also what are you studying?

Part of the reason why I decided upon it is because of the significantly reduced cost. There is apparently such a huge shortage of trained medical professionals that the grants were very numerous. I'll graduate with a fraction of the debt I would have had with another major.

Not really. Only degrees like Medicine and engineering ( and some others top 10 degrees) is important. Apart from that the low tier degrees are worthless.

My birth sex was male but I have always identified as female. I'm in transition. I'll be starting a two year degree in nursing.

What area do you live in? It is VERY difficult to get a new grad nursing job without a BSN in a lot of areas. No problem though if you are willing to relocate. My wife went to Fargo, ND to get a job and was able to get a travel position and move back to California after 9 months (she graduated at age 39). After you get 1yr experience you can get a job almost anywhere, though BSN is still preferred.

Congrats, Sonikku. You've made a lot of big decisions lately. Good to see someone taking charge to make her life what she wants it to be rather than simply whining that no one else is doing so. And thirty-two is a babe in arms - your Social Security full retirement age will likely be a hundred!

I would suggest looking at more than two years. Buddy of mine got his nursing degree and ended up going back into engineering because he was still being forced to do split shifts - every employer wanted him, but for twenty hours and without benefits.

Actually, I know a guy that's an LPN and he makes ok money. As an RN you'll probably even be above the poverty line! Just get good at memorizing medicines and their effects, you'll never need to know them because they'll all be on your patients' charts, but you need to know them anyway or you'll fail.

I'm 36 and never took one day in college. I need and want to go though. I don't think it's never too late to get a higher education. I was looking at cloud computing/security myself.

I have two cousins who are nurses. One took the long way and it was about 4 or so years before she got her Bachelors in nursing. Thankfully, when I have a medical aliment I can call or Facebook message my cousins for advice. I do chat with my Doc on the Internet too.

I'm always happy when another person can have something positive happen in their lives. Too many haters around here though and I usually just ignore them.
