Though I am at the ripe old age of 32, which is admittedly pretty late in life to be doing this sort of thing, I still need to see this through. I'm starting over in pursuit of a skill that's actually worth a damn.

Not really. Only degrees like Medicine and engineering ( and some others top 10 degrees) is important. I'm 36 and never took one day in college. I need and want to go though. I don't think it's never too late to get a higher education. I was looking at cloud computing/security myself.
I have two cousins who are nurses. One took the long way and it was about 4 or so years before she got her Bachelors in nursing. Thankfully, when I have a medical aliment I can call or Facebook message my cousins for advice. I do chat with my Doc on the Internet too.
