If that was true we wouldn't have $1.3T in student loan debt. No, college is not cheap anymore. Unless you attend community college for 2 years and transfer to a state college. That's what I did and saved money on tuition. My last 2 years were at a state college. Yes, it's cheaper than a private school but still expensive. And, tuition has been steadily creeping up year after year.

College is business first. Education second. I'd like to see drastic changes made to lessen the time one needs to spend in college.

Why 4 years? I went to college for special education. Why did I have to spend my first 2 years in history, algebra, literature, etc? These are courses that I've already taken in high school and the big question is WHAT DO THESE COURSES HAVE TO DO WITH MY FIELD? I haven't done an algebra problem in years. IMO, college should be 2 years with the main focus on your field. For me, that would be intensive practice in the school districts. The focus being on my field and nothing more. I'm not becoming a well rounded student by taking classes I have ZERO interest in. If I want to learn about history I'll do that on my own time.

The system is antiquated. We need changes. This is why I really like MOOCs like Coursera and Udex. Are they going to replace Universities and state colleges? Not in their current form. But who knows? Maybe they'll catch on and put pressure on traditional colleges to change.

Graduates from private colleges have something like double to triple the amount of debt over public colleges, and generally leave with inferior degrees. The overall debt average is also skewed by law degrees and medical degrees. If you graduate from a public college with more debt than the cost of a new sedan, you've done goofed. If you graduate from college and can't find a job that can afford a new sedan on a payment plan, you've really done goofed.

True.

The people who really goofed are going to have to find creative ways to pay back their loans. They could do the 10 year plan and pay a shit load in interest, and delay putting money away for retirement. Or, they can find ways to make money quickly. I'm subbed to a YT channel and the guy that I'm watching is on a quest to make $100k this year selling used jeans on eBay. He's actually doing really well. He sold over $6k last month. All of this while maintaining a real career.

If they're willing to bust your ass for a few years it can be done. But, they will have to punt leisure in the meantime. No Netflix, video games, weekend w/ friends, etc. In the end it's worth it.

Congratulations, its not easy going back. I hope you do well and get what you want from it.

I went back at 39, and will be done this year at 42 for a bachelors. I don't need it, it will not help me at my current job, but was something I had the opportunity to do for free so figured why not. After some time off, I may go back for my masters because it will be free as well, and because my wife has one and I am competitive. It has taken a lot of time, such as now. I am supposed to be doing homework that is due by midnight tomorrow, yet I always browse online first. I get up before everyone else at home on my days off so that I don't feel like I am taking away family time. I hate to sit in the office while they're out there watching tv, going on a walk, etc. So I get up early, or go to bed late and try to do most of it. Not always easy, and not guaranteed to make someone a success, but generally doesn't hurt except finances.

Good for the OP, the attorney general of Crimea has aspirations!

Getting an M.D. or doctorate degree in pharmacy takes 8 years from the beginning of college. 32 isn't old in general, but it's probably too old for these career paths. Not to mention the debt load is no joke. Becoming an RN is much less painful.

If it's that old, hope it's an HP.
TI-85. My younger brother used it in high school. Manufactured in '92. These kids are yooooooouuuuuung.

OP. Congrats. I hope everything goes well for you. Do you know what type of nursing you want to go in to?

Ironically yesterday was my my daughters last day at college.

My baby has graduated from college. I am now officially an old fart.

I just realized my "new" HP is over 20 years old now.
I still use an hp48 daily. They're my primary computing devices. I have a desk drawer full of them in various states of disrepair. Most of them are 'newer' as far as hp48s go(later revisions with the black lcd), but I've been using the platform since the 48S was new.

AFAIK, there still isn't a cogo program that surpasses my ~20yr old software. Newer stuff seems to be made for dummies, and is highly restrictive with too much button pushing. Back in the day, I could break a calculator, leave the job to buy another, and get back with little time lost, and less money spent than the repair bill of a dedicated device. Bonus was it's inherently a calculator. You didn't have the launch an emulated piece of shit to do math. Crunch numbers, then execute them without leaving the current screen. I'm still bitter about hp leaving serious calculator development :^(

For the OP, Congratulations! My daughter's in school for nursing. It's good career if you're suited for that sort of thing. I'm not. I don't like people :^D

My birth sex was male but I have always identified as female. I'm in transition. I'll be starting a two year degree in nursing.

I just had a random question pop into my brain, I hope it doesn't offend. Is a newly "formed" poonany tighter than say a 27 year old "birth" poonany that has had a child?

I can't imagine a birth mother would be as tight as a recently post op transwoman. Dilating post up is important, and it begins with small rods and gradually expands to larger ones.

So if you have a small dick, definitely hit up a transwoman instead a couple months after her surgery.

I can't take it anymore scavenging for low skill jobs with split shifts and constantly changing hours all for a pittance in pay and no hope for a better future. Though I am at the ripe old age of 32, which is admittedly pretty late in life to be doing this sort of thing, I still need to see this through. I'm starting over in pursuit of a skill that's actually worth a damn.

I'm gonna be a registered nurse!

If you can Buckle Down and make it you will always have job opportunities.
One of the Best Majors you can have.
Good Luck!!

Just out of curiosity, do you have friends who are RNs? People you can have long, serious talks with about the career (preferably over a glass of wine.)

I only ask because it's a pretty thankless job, and I'd hate for you to wind up back at square one 6-7 years from now, because you decide you hate it.

I don't think it's too late at 32. I went back for my Bachelor's at 27, which I'm on pace to finish next year. Part of me wishes I had just done all 4 years right off the bat. I'll finish without having to take out loans, but I'll be at entry level at 30 again :S

I've worked for little over minimum wage jobs in customer service and call centers dealing directly with members of the public with nothing but problems. You don't need to talk to me about thankless work.

Gee--What are Not thankless Jobs Today?? Aren't they All Mostly Thankless??
At least as a Registered Nurse you can Make $75,000.00 to 100,000.00 with overtime and can even make $$ traveling around the USA and getting Paid.

There's thankless and then there's thankless. One of the reasons it pays well is that nursing has a higher-than-average attrition rate. (People get a qualification, then they get a job, then they quit w/in a couple years because they hate it.) Some people love it, but they're a minority.

My brother wanted to be an EMT and it was other EMTs that convinced him it probably wasn't the job for him. Getting a few opinions from people in a given field, before you pursue a career in that field, is common sense.

ftfy, there's nothing common about having sense.

Agreed that nursing is stressful though, the turnover rate is high and most companies know it so they make no attempts at retaining employees.

That MSDN stuff is useless, you can't use it for commercial purposes.

Oh and congratulations to your admission!

Congrats brother. When you get into your course shell go to the student software store and get everything you can find that you want and make sure you save the cd keys in a safe place. I've managed to get office 10, 13, 16 and 365 through it plus w7-10 multiple versions of each and since they are still upgradeable to 10 I can consider them all to be separate copies of 10. Make sure to use your student ID to get a student discount on Amazon Prime membership too.

Congrats OP. Investing in oneself is always worthwhile, regardless of age. I learned that from my mother, who graduated from college at age 52. Good luck in nursing school!
