I won the Donkey Kong Country contest at my local Blockbuster. It was a special version of the game with a timer for time attack to get the most bananas while completing the most levels.

I did also at my local Blockbuster video. 1 year of free game rentals. My brother and I took the competition seriously and no one else at the store came close. Not sure why we didn't advance. They probably thought there was cheating involved or something.

I think I would be so much richer. I remember paying $12.95/hr to get on AOL, then it went down to $9.95/hr. I think my entire paycheck went to them.

Only a few people had cell phones back then, yet we managed to survive.

i know! that is probably the biggest change of all between 94 and now. my dad didnt get a phone for work until 96 and it was a bag phone, lol. and i didnt get my own till 99.

now people freak out if they forget the phone at home and are only going to be gone for an hour or two. OMG WHAT IF SOMEHTING BAD HAPPENS?! then you will just have to deal w/ it like in the olden days.

lol we paid like 10$ for 10 measly hours a month, until they went to unlimited in like 96. we werent allowed to exceed that limit, so we used the batch download to very quickly sign on, download mail, and sign off.

and we would write a list of things we wanted to look at when we were online, hurry up and do all those things, then sign off.

"Goodbye!"

I had internet in grad school. Used some mainframe based text browser, Charlette, I think (didn't really understand the web concept then, just knew that if I typed www instead of gopher that it was another way to access info normally found through gopher). Then Mosaic on Unix. Then downloaded the first alpha of Mosaic for Windows. By '94 I was playing with creating my own pages. By '95 I had a job and was assigned the task of developing my division's website as I was the "internet guru".

I like this thread, I connect a lot with the content.... That being said, I also agree with the fact people are selfish obnoxious bastards now-a-days. Good to see there is still some good considerate people left.

I do not have a smart phone im still rocking the flip-phone, people laugh but I could careless I use straighttalk and pay half of what they do on my monthly bill. Plus, it absolutely WORKS everywhere I need it to work.

I went online in the early 80s via CompuServe (75476,112 was my ID). Here was my modem:

That looks an awful lot like my Atari 2600 "Gameline Master Module" modem.

I never used it and ultimately sent my first email on an SNES X-BAND videogame modem during the Atlanta market beta test.

I remember trying to download porn on crappy local BBS's without a credit card on those crappy sub-56k modems.... slowly... watching those boobs display 1 line at a time.

The year I bought my very first computer ever. Was a 486 system. Loaded Doom and played my first LAN game with friends. Fun times. One of the fondest times in my life.

My droid recently broke and I went back to my spare "dumb phone". Honestly, it works better as a phone, but that is where the convenience ends.

I really find droid convenient in terms of taking an internet connection with me wherever I need to go. Important when I'm monitoring a ticketboard, alert system or simply out in the middle of a data center and I can't get on wifi. Believe me I understand your annoyance w/ the social status stigma phones have. Ridiculous.

I'd agree especially if I knew what I know what I do now. Buy AOL, sell in 99 then apple only. Score!

Yeah, if no innertubes you were doing it wrong (see AOL). Actually, all the proprietary services offered seperate access at some point before integrating into their GUI (i.e. different phone number). Dunno when exactly.

We only got Internet in our city around 1999. Our first computer around year 2000 maybe a bit before. A couple years later they started providing DSL, it was actually my Christmas present. I remember the first time I compiled a C++ program, it was maybe a few months after we got our first computer. The thought of being able to write code and have it do something on the computer was so awesome. A few years later I also started my own website, that was a pretty awesome feeling even though nobody really went to it. I used the program edit.com to make it, I thought I was all badass lol. Good times. Now I take all that stuff for granted.
