And this is why our students are doing worse and worse. Society babies kids too much these days. Students in Asia are busy studying so they will do well testing into good high schools as it will affect their future careers while kids here are allowed to spell 'tomorrow' wrong. What the fuck is wrong with our country. Instead of messing around on twitter, how about the kid spend more time studying.

Yea.

I taught in South Korea for over 2 years. I had a kid who could speak 3 languages. English, Chinese and his native language Korean. I'd go past the coffee shop on a Friday night and see hoards of students studying. The downside is student suicide is the highest in the world. Fail the highschool exam for college and it's pretty much over.

I can see both sides of the argument here. On one side, the school needs to be sensitive to the fact that the kid could have been humiliated by the teacher, then there is the potential for bullying, and live-streaming his suicide. Then there is a troubling legal / union issue that if teachers are responding to students after hours, then that could be considered in a lawsuit for unpaid wages.

The other side, is not to take things like this so seriously, it was playful banter, and lighten up.

edit: seems I went off half-cocked on this one. She isn't a teacher but is their social media person, so responding was part of her job. May still have questionable hours and they maybe wouldn't want her "working" from home.

If a kid can't take a tiny bit of grief over a misspelled word then they're special enough to need something other than public school.

Gay kids are bullied relentlessly and that's okay (one article from a while back said 35% of gay kids heard teachers make anti-gay comments — as icing to go on the cake of beatings and incessant anti-gay language from students) but a kid gets an innocuous jibe about a misspelled word and it's worthy of firing? Get real.

This is hardly unique to education. People getting fired for whatever the hell their superiors feel like is par for course in private industry.

This thread only exists because american conservatives find the circumstances particular useful for their agitprop. "Big education" being too "politically correct", even though the situation has nothing to do with either.
If you think there isn't a ridiculous standard for teacher behavior then you don't know the public education system well enough.

Beer and wine consumption should never be grounds for firing as long as it does not directly affect job performance. Her having fun in photos on her vacation certainly does not count. No legal behavior should be grounds for firing. Behavior is either legal or it's not.

Plus, it's the tu quoque fallacy to dismiss the situation itself. Even if some other private sector jobs have ridiculous standards and enforcement doesn't mean this job should.

Everyone remember the teacher who was fired for posting a photo on Facebook of her holding a glass on wine during her vacation to Germany?

The Nazis fled to this country and settled in the education field.
You have to be careful when you casually compare people to Nazis. It makes makes you look ridiculous and destroys any credibility you may have had in the discussion.

Citation needed.

Oh? Can you even define social justice?
Asking someone for a citation on their opinion, as well as playing the "can you even define it" game, destroys your credibility even further, lol.

Nah, just kidding. Really only calling you out because I'm probably older than you and over the years met and interviewed several concentration camp survivors. You can learn about what happened from school and books, and try to wrap your mind around how horrific it was, but meeting someone who was actually there turned it from an abstract piece of history into reality for me. Most of the them were children during the Holocaust, showing me their tattooed number and speaking about lost family and crimes so barbaric it's hard to comprehend. So, I'm careful to never casually compare people to Nazis like you did. It's just so disrespectful, imho.

So, that's all. Not picking an iNet fight. It's not really my place to try and teach you better.

The point is this is hardly some unique situation: don't like some employee so use whatever lame excuse to fire them. If anything, notice that the conservatives use this as an opportunity to attack unions, which is about the only thing here standing in the way of such behavior. The irony can't be more palpable.

Thank you again for your concern. Yeah, who needs evidence to substantiate an opinion? They have absolutely no meaning or worth!

You're concern trolling and not very expertly.

And yet private sector jobs generally pay better considering the required education and are less subject to the absurd level of "piety" that teachers are subjected to. Something like 50% of teachers quit within the first so many years (3?). It's only getting worse as the profession continues to become more vilified.
