Well, what's the weight of half a tank of fuel? If it's any significant weight, then yes, you will get better mileage.

I don't see why adding a few more gallons of gasoline will help you achieve more mileage...

That's not even the equivalent of an extra adult passenger in a car...

Plus... it'd be less mileage because you have to keep driving to the gas station to get your car refueled.

It won't. That's the whole point of this thread.

In that case, you have to stop at the gas station twice for the same amount of gas as filling up completely once. The tiny difference all this makes is probably negated from that extra stop, even moreso if it's out of your way.

Well I have a 30 gallon tank and can notice the weight different between when it's full and empty so I'd assume there's some truth to this savings but I just don't know how much or if it's enough to do this for.

Of course it will get you better gas mileage. But is going from 25mpg to 25.01mpg worth going to the gas station twice as often? I've been to a gas station and believe me they are not all that exciting.

There's definitely truth, but not enough to justify the PITA it's going to cause.

There's many better, more effective things to do for your MPG than deal with the PITA that would be.

I don't know the density of gasoline but I'm guessing you'd get .25-.5 more MPG. So an extra 7-10 miles for tank (so two stops at the station to get that even) and thats if absolutely everything was kept exactly the same.

But as soon as you have a passenger with you once it probably negates that.

Since you'll never have everything the exact same between tanks, its completely pointless.. better things to do are: car is in decent running shape (my car easily gets the MPG to this day that its EPA-rated for and its a 1993), tires inflated to manual's specs, no excess weight/junk in the car, and drive very easily (coast as much as possible, don't hammer on the accel., etc). Yeah when I drive a 3 hour trip with 3 others in the car I might loose a MPG or two than I would be by myself, but I'll easily take the company and prolly get a few bucks from them for gas anyway.

Considering 1 gallon of gasoline is approximately 7 pounds.

My tank only holds 11 gallons, then at half a tank, I would only be saving about 40 pounds in weight.

That's probably less than a 1% difference in MPG based on the http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/driveHabits.shtml page.

I already get 25MPG in the city, which means, I'd get an extra 0.25 MPG with the 40lb difference.

Wow, did I do the math wrong? That's a pretty good savings!
