I finally bought a car today

A 2001 civic ex. It's nothing special but it will be fine for my drive to work. The girl was asking 4000 and I got it for 3500, and she wrote the bill of sale so I won't have to pay sales tax. The miles are high(150k) but I will take my chance, almost all my vehicles have had 100-200k and have been lucky so far. It had a new transmission installed last year and new tires a month ago.

You will pay sales tax when you register it, unless she collected taxes on your behalf and will be sending that off to the state. The only way I know to scam on a car sales tax is to lie about how little you purchased it for although if you go to the DMV and say the 2008 corvette cost $1200 look here it's on the bill of sale, they will go by some book value isntead. Two of the last times I've sold a car I was asked to lie about this on the receipt and both times have said no. I've instead given the buyer a few bucks towards their taxes because I think going in on tax fraud with a total stranger is about as bad an idea as it gets.

Are you POSITIVE? Sounds absolutely ridiculous to me. In Alabama and New York and I think Nova Scotia (holla) you pay tax on sales price regardless. It's just when you buy from a dealer you pay the tax to them directly, whereas if you private party you pay it at time of registration, but there's no way around it. I highly doubt you guys are able to actually never pay it at all.

Cause sales tax in NY is 8 fvcking % on a car. If I didn't have to pay that should I buy private party rest assured I'd never buy from a dealer again.

Well, it seems you're right! Apparently it's similar in virginia, but you still pay 3% of sales price. I don't know what dealership price is, though.

Wow I am loving the gas mileage. I'm not sure how big the tank is but the girl filled up when she left to meet me. She drove 130 mniles, it was around 3/4 tank. I put anothet 251 and the gas light came on. So at least 381 but that was hwy miles, and I just put 10 bucks in and it bumped me from gas light to almost 1/2. Also I was driving at a steady 65-70 and easy take offs, grandpa driving

They say that the Civic engines are typically good for 500,000km. I think that's around 325,000 miles.

and walker and sometime runner. i had some regrets ofcourse . . . still do

i bought my first late in life, 38, and drove it rarely for the first 8-10
months. now i'm zipping around fairly regularly, looking for any reason
to make those saudi sheiks fatter.

I do the tax avoidance thing on smaller purchases, like sub $2000 you can usually get away with just sticking $1 on the title and only paying 7 cents sales tax. You can just say it was someone you know and they didnt charge you for it, it was just a handmedown car, the dollar is just to fill the slot. I've never been questioned.
