Can you time shift within live recordings (REW/PAUSE/FF) with that Tablo setup?

Yes. It's essentially a sensibly priced Tivo. My only complaint is live TV channel switching is a little slow. Other than that, its perfect. You can even stream your recorded shows when away from home if you open up ports on your router. It works with Roku, Firestick, Android and Apple products, and even LG Smart TV's have an app built in.

Eh, I'm dumping my Roku. Streaming connections and quality are too variable. Going back to Xfinity with a TiVo (though my setup failed due to a regional problem with the update server).

Funny thing is only thing I miss from cable is mindless brain relaxation by killing time with mindless episodes on HGTV and Food Network in the evenings and at night.

Figured I'd join everyone else in 2018 and cut the TV and home phone. I had a FTTH bundle so everything was included but just called today to cut the TV and phone. I'll save about $50/mo this way. Not as much as I hoped though. I even asked about a lower internet tier but it was like ~$5 difference so no point.

$50 is still $50 though. I would go weeks without watching TV, and the only calls I ever got on my landline were nuisance calls anyway. That and people leaving me voicemails for stuff and I'd forget to check all the time as for some reason this particular phone does not have an indicator light like most phones. So at least I don't have to worry about checking that VM anymore. Most people that should have my number have my cell anyway.

Only thing I'm going to miss is actually picking up the landline phone to make a call. I just always preferred a real phone for that. But not really a huge deal.
if you miss the landline you could go with a free solution like freephoneline.ca. you by the sip data to add to your ATA device (I use a cisco spa122) for a nominal fee. Works great for me.

You could always get an antenna setup and get a bunch of channels for free.

I keep thinking about getting a TiVo or something. But then I think about how the FCC wants to transition to ATSC 3.0. And then I think I should wait until products compatible with that come out. (I have several tuners already, but they're not so user friendly.)

This used to be true - if you had internet from the local cable company, they would often have unencrypted local channels you could pick up without a box. A few years ago, the FCC allowed cable companies to start encrypting the local channels too, so I doubt you'll find many places where you could get free local channels via your cable line (when you don't pay for basic cable).

I don't think it was basic cable. It was just the local channels.

The Tablo only works with an HDTV antenna or will it record streams from amazon, Netflix, etc?

Last time I had "basic cable", it was really only the local channels, that's why I labeled it as such.

I think a lot of cable providers have levels of what is "basic" cable. There is one that is just your plain old local channels. My grandma in Chicago had that crap. Then there are higher levels that include TBS, TNT, CNN, MSNBC, FoxNews, Cartoon Network and all that. I even think there's basic Spanish packages as well.

They keep you coming and going.

I said that I read you could plug in a coaxial and get local HD channels from what I read on another forum. That was years ago though, but figured I'd throw it out there.

I oddly miss the basic cable we had here, but probably mostly as a nostalgia thing because it's what I grew up with. I still remember most of the channel numbers for the channels/cartoons I watched as a kid. Ask me the channel number for any modern channel on fibre, dish or other modern services and I have no clue. The basic cable also had actual local news and such too. Though I think they lost that years back. The fibre service I had was good but I only really watched a few channels anyway. Was just not worth it for me to pay for. Same with land line, it was nice to have, but not more than that, I can live without it.

"Free" cable.

Funny enough when I canceled my cable years ago to get the fibre service they never even bothered to come remove the drop. They were still offering basic/analog at the time so I technically could have just kept using it. Might get them to come remove their end of the drop and just leave it coiled up actually, could use for an antenna if I do decide to get/make one.

It's probably your Internet connection. Every Roku product I've ever owned has been solid. I even have an old Roku XD in my basement gym that I still use.

My Inet is solid on my computer when streaming and long downloads. I live in Cow Hampshire, probably further away from streaming services than major cities.

It's OTA only. Why would you record a streaming service?

I get some TV from Spectrum streaming, Amazon, Cartoon site and it would be nice to be able to capture some of these streams and watch them again without digging around for them and the ability to watch them on other TVs.

I haven't had too much trouble finding stuff to fill that general role via YouTube.

Well the girl and I set up the internet/TV setup for the new condo that just closed yesterday. Verizon had an internet 50/50 plan that was 50 bucks with local channels, or for 30 bucks more you could get gigabit internet and a package of cable channels as well. These channel packages have themes to them and include around 50 channels instead of say the 150 that a regular preferred TV will get you. So I said fuck it and went with that. It will have channels like Food Network, HGTV, Bravo (for top chef), Comedy Central, ESPN and a few other decent ones.

So basically we will spend $15 bucks each to get 50 channels of which we'll only watch 10 of, instead of paying more and getting 150 channels of which we'll watch only 10. Figured like kinda meeting in the middle.

No longer a cord cutter though.

Funny thing with all this I thought I was saving myself $50/mo in bills doing this.

My city taxes went up by $50/mo. So I just break even.
