Figured I'd join everyone else in 2018 and cut the TV and home phone. I had a FTTH bundle so everything was included but just called today to cut the TV and phone. I'll save about $50/mo this way. Not as much as I hoped though. I even asked about a lower internet tier but it was like ~$5 difference so no point.

$50 is still $50 though. I would go weeks without watching TV, and the only calls I ever got on my landline were nuisance calls anyway. That and people leaving me voicemails for stuff and I'd forget to check all the time as for some reason this particular phone does not have an indicator light like most phones. So at least I don't have to worry about checking that VM anymore. Most people that should have my number have my cell anyway.

Only thing I'm going to miss is actually picking up the landline phone to make a call. I just always preferred a real phone for that. But not really a huge deal.

Only time I really watched TV is when I'm eating a meal, just to have noise/something to watch. Stuck a piece of wire in the antenna socket and I get Global News in HD. Good enough.

There was a couple shows on Discovery and HGTV I liked to watch though but not worth keeping the service just for that.

Cut cable a few years ago and haven't ever had phone. I pay $12 for netflix, leech off someone elses Hulu, and have prime video and get the fill of the TV trash I need to drown out my thoughts with that.

I thought I was late to the party when I cut DirecTV 2 years ago, and cut our land line 4 years ago. It was hard on my wife at first, but she got used to not having satellite TV. Land line was a $30 savings and DirecTV was a $110 savings. I just wish there was real competition for internet providers. I keep having to bounce between AT&T and Spectrum every 2 years just to keep the price down.

I've never had any pay for TV, I would be more impressed if you got rid of high speed internet.

I prefer landline because it's hardwired, not susceptible to power failures or lack of batteries, or interference.

Yeah landline is also more reliable. Though in my case because it was through FTTH it still relied on equipment and power being present at my house. That said the built in UPS is good for like 12 hours or something like that.

Cell service here is pretty solid though.

I wanted to get rid of my landline (local + long distance) several years ago but then it changed and costs me $1.60/month. I wanted to cancel my DirecTV and then it changed and costs me $15/month (Ultimate+NFLST). Now, if I can just cut my wife's shopping bill ...

Ooma and forget about it. Unless of course your Internet goes down.

Your modern TVs can tune local HD channels, so there's that. I've read stories of people being able to plug in a coaxial cable to the TV without cable and still getting channels. May not be in all areas. I think it's a law in some places or something.

Congrats! I cut the cord about three years ago and haven't looked back. When 33% of TV shows are dedicated to commercials, you just have to step back and ask yourself is it really worth it (especially if you never watch sports).

Yeah, I'm getting to the point I don't really care about watching any sports and most TV shows are 'reality' crap shows...so I need to seriously consider doing this now.

The only thing that keeps me from dropping my landline is emergencies. In a true, large scale emergency, cellular service will either be so busy that no one can get through or it will be shut off to the masses. Only us first responders will have access. That and I have Wireless Priority Service.

That's why I have a DVR and never watch live TV.

I would to if it wasnt for sports. As far as i can tell there is not a good way to get sports without having cable.

I would want to cut the cord but with data caps, I would go over the cap every month. I watch sports and the wife watches lots of TV. Add into that movie streaming, video game playing, game downloads which are around 50GB now.

I'm glad we don't have data caps here. I pushed a couple TB in a day once. Just wanted to see if I could do it.

And yeah sports might be tricky. There's the Olympics coming soon actually, I usually sort of follow that, but guess I'll be able to follow it at work. Sometimes you can get streams for stuff like that but it's hit and miss since they get shut down.

You still have OTA channels right? Most of the major networks can still be picked up OTA with an antenna. If you have an NBC affiliate in your area that still broadcasts OTA you should be able to pick up the Olympics.

Cbc streaming works fine.

I get global news but that's it. There's a couple other channels but they are too snowy. Might be able to get more with a better antenna though. That might be something fun to play around with some time. Right now I'm just using a random length piece of wire lol. It's incredible how clear the channels can be on digital OTA though.

Welcome, have been off for about six years now. We would have kept it for a few channels if not for the bullshit that is dealing with Roger's & Bell's billing practices.

Yeah I forgot you're way up north aren't ya. It might be woth looking into trying a cheap indoor antenna just to see what you get. It's probably better than a piece of wire but I've done that in a pinch to haha.
I use one similar to this Channel Master Flatenna and it works pretty well for the price. I also have a Channel Master OTA dvr that works very well but it is a little expensive. Might be worth looking into if you decide to keep the cord cut.
