I find it odd that parents go out and buy cars...

for their kids... It's weird, I usually either see this poor kid driving a beatup '89 taurus or '93 windstar minivan that is probably going to puke and choke on it's own vomit at the worst time and then I see these kids driving H2s, Mercedes SUVs, and other high end vehicles, while the middle car seems to be a lot less common. Am I the only one to find this odd? Remember I've seen beatup cars exit hs parking lots right after a row of fancy cars that are clearly driven by kids..

Another thing, what makes a parent believe that their child should be driving a brand new vehicle that costs more than some people's houses? $50K vehicle for a kid in HS is absurd, anyone agree? Sure you can say 'it's not my money' but I think it's a bit ridiculous considering that starting your kid off with expensive things will only set them up for failure..

where do you live? In the hs parking lots arroudn here, students usually drive various year civics or other normal common cars probably had for under $10k. There were 3 kids with nice cars last year, 2 had G35s, 1 had a Lexus SC430. Otherwise, its common cars like acura legends, civics, maybe a camry, caravan, sentra, etc.

btw I live in fairfax,va so the kids parents are usually loaded.

I think its because rich parents buy their kid a car and normal people have thier kid buy their own car...

I bought my grandpa's old Dodge pickup when I was a kid. Honestly I think I got the better end of the deal, I didn't kill myself in a sports car and I learned how to work on cars pretty quickly.

Even if I were rich, my kid wouldn't be getting a brand new expensive car. They'd be lucky to get a new car and it wouldn't be expensive or nice. It would be practical and safe.

Nevermind, I wouldn't buy them one. They'd be workin' for that sh!t somehow, but raising ~$10K (give or take a few grand) is kind hard for teenagers.

I had to buy my own car. That's why I drive a 99 Mustang V6 autotragic. It was the nicest, most reliable (on paper) car I could afford at the time.

I am sorry but when you have millions in the bank you probably would buy ur kid a car.

Your way of thinking would change. Instead of the kid wasting money doing odd jobbs, you would probably make him take lessons and crap to get a head start in life.

who are you to judge how people spend their money? buying nice things for children and teaching them the value of money are not mutually exclusive.

When I turned 18 I bought my own Mazda3 Hatch for $22,000. My dad was the co-signer because I had no credit and he had awesome credit.

I pay for every $280 a month bill and pay my own insurance.

Just because a kid has a nice car doesn't mean they are spoiled. They might have worked very hard for it like me.

if you had the money to do so, and loved your kids like you should, you would do the same. how can you be against doing something nice for your kid? whats next, complaining about people who take their kids out to nice restaurants, or buy five star notebooks for twice the price of the cheap ones?

Why the hell would you do that when there's still college to consider. I would've just got any car that works.

To the OP, think of this way (btw Im not a spoiled rich kid or even rich, I can just put myself into their shoes and show from their side) the parent(s) worked hard all of their lives to enjoy their money and give their family a decent life. If they can afford to buy their kid a new car why not? Its about giving your kids a good life and if you can afford to buy them a new car, I would too. People want whats best for their family and they should be allowed to give their family anything they want/can without having onlookers judging and being jealous/envious.

Getting a real job at 16-17 gets you a head start if you ask me. But yes, in terms of millions of dollars, they'd probly get a car.

Generally I agree. However I also think a childhood of fighting seemingly insurmountable financial odds is another great way to kill the drive to succeed. Like most things, the middle ground is best.

Believe it or not, there are people out there that can attend college and make a car payment...at the same time.

I bet that just blows your mind.

Not giving a 16 year old kid a 50k car is also about giving them a good life. It's about developing them into an adult that can provide that life for themselves. Parents won't be around forever.

Survival of the fittest. What happens when the rich kid and his $50,000 Hummer and the poor kid and his $3000 Geo Metro go head-to-head...literally?

Because my scholarships cover college. And if not, my parents will cover it.

My parents are rich, and they worked their asses off for years to get there. Their main drive was to be able to have their children live comfortably. I make awesome grades and work real hard at my job and they pay me back by giving me money when I need it and paying for my college.

How about a 16 year old getting a new '07 toyota camry?...

Don't blame me, I just wanted a car like a cheap mazda3 or maybe a used volkswagen jetta so I can migrate from my high school to a community college which is not even in walking distance and back (bus doesn't run through high school, you have to walk through a big park to get there after taking a bus). But they want everything new. Although it's going to be mine, I didn't really want a car that expensive...

They want to make the family life comfortable, so anything we can get our hands on that will be needed in the future, we'll get it when we need it. They worked their asses off, immigrating from Vietnam over here, and now we live a pretty decent life (for the most part). But in return, I must work hard through school.

There's a big difference between Camry and a new H2, or buying a kid a second BMW after he crashed the first one. I wish I was making this stuff up.
