OH YESS!!!

Anyways, a while back ago I thought I lost a 50yr old negative of my grandpa standing over rice fields in Vietnam and since he was a famous photographer and I am too (well I am!) it had some setimental value to me (I never met him, he died in 1953-54) and I got real pissed. So I trashed my room looking for it to no avail. Just when I opened my CD-Case to a CD it was there!! I totally forgot I left it in there!! I am totally happy now

Wow, that's amazing, really. It's good to see you have a great grasp of heirlooms and family history at such a young age..Most don't realize it until it's too late to do anything about it.

Cool!!! I'm glad you got it back. There are some things that can never be replaced for any amount of money. Hang on to it now.

It is great that you found it.
Which format is it in?
You should make a copy of the original by contact print or using a copy stand, because it may have been poorly store and on its last leg befor the emotion/plastic backing break down. And, make sure to store the orignal neg properly.

Woohoo, I am glad to hear it urbantechie. I lost a ring that was my grandfather's years ago, and I never found it again. So I know how upsetting it can be to lose something that belonged to someone you never met. Congratulations again.

<Edit> Ack, I cannot spell today.

Classic 6x6.

I'm relieved now since if my dad ever found out, he would be upset.

<< Yep! I need to get a fireproof or safebox for my stuff! >>

Get a safe deposit box instead. It's worth the few bucks a month to be secure. The fire proof box isn't heat proof. A negative might not make it through a fire.

Also if you wouldn't mind could you have a picture made or just scan the negative. Maybe you could post a link so we could see it.

Thanks

Use a loop/magnifying glass to look over the neg for any flaws that would lift the emotion of the backing. If you can't find flaw, then try soaking the neg in distilled water for 1~2 hours then wash it in a wash solution (water/solution at room temp). If you can't get the dirt off it, then retry the previous steps for 2X the time.

If the dirt is grease, and is on the back side (not the jell side), then gently wipe it off with a film cleaning solution or lighter fluid, then soak it and re-wash it as above step, then refix it after the cleaning wash and then a final wash.

To do a contact print, you will need a pitch black room & clean contact glass plate, and do a strip test to get the perfect exposure (can do dogging & burning at this stage if you are really addvance). Process your strip test neg, then compare the density to a known good neg over a light table. Once you have decide a time/f stop, then go a head and make a contact print. The best way to get consitancy on your print/contact is to aim for 10~30 sec exposure time (personally I stay aroung 15~20 sec for consitancy/control).

Also, you should check the library or book store for reading materials on restoring technique.

Contact copy the neg to neg is not the same as neg to paper, it will take some work to get it right.

You have to use Professional B/W Duplicating Film, or the trickyer Tmax-100 then do a reversal processing.

Nice job on that print urban, burning and dodging can be a bitch (i tend to drop the tool and end up with little ufo's). I assume all the imperfections are from the negative. Otherwise you got some serious lens cleaning to do

You said your grandfather was a famous photographer, is there anything I might recognize? How about stuff of yours?

All those pictures of President Diem in Vietnam (post Vietnam-War era?) was taken by him.

Plantanthera: Would this be like making a positve?

How could he have taken vietnam war photos? It didn't start until after he died(1954). I guess during the time period leading up to it?

I'd really like to see some more of his stuff, were do you know of that we could find it?

Yes it is like making a positive.

You use a positive film to sandwich with the neg film = tocreate a neg for archive.
