They use systems like that in the theater because the controller boards are all ISA and the K6 500 systems were getting too slow for the software and newer programs.

i knew/know what they are, but to put them on a p4 board is what i considered the weirdest part

Mostly for older controller cards that don't need a high data transfer speed. 2 years ago I built a dual P4 Xeon server with 1gb of RAM, SCSI Ultra 320 RAID array, etc. that had 2 ISA serial boards in it. They were running a bunch of dummy terminals but they needed the server to be able to process a crapload of data at various times.

So in a situation like that there's a market that needs a board like that, and is willing to pay the price for it!

VESA was a local bus extension of ISA. It was shortlived as the PCI bus came out shortly after some 11 years ago.

Most parts that were VLB were video cards although some SCSI controllers were made. Again, we're talking ten year old stuff here and since a computer year is a dog year that's a dog gone long time!
