I would lose that agenda book by the end of the semester.

i've started putting all of my stuff in iCal and having it remind me when tests and whatnot come up.

iCal? learn me

*shudder* outlook? For some reason I'd rather stick a fork in my eye. hmm

I am sitting there waiting to take my final (30% of our overall grade) and I quickly realize something isn't right. It's 5 minutes after class is supposed to start and no one is there still. Just me, sitting by myself, in a pathetic state.

I leave and go home to read over the syllabus again. On the last page, it also clearly states the final will be May 10th...last week. Doh' No final? That just dropped my grade 30% automatically...aka I am now failing.

After I finished crying like a baby and punching myself in the face, I get composed and write the professor an email explaining my stupidity. She replies saying that I cannot take the final and she doesn't know what she should do, as I was doing quite well in the course up until this point.

She then replied again coming up with a "solution" She gave me 12 assignments to complete, including an essay & a project, just to get a passing grade. Jebus this sh!t will take all week with my remaining finals and work.

I would have easily received a B in the course after working all semester. Now I have work my ass off again just to pass. Sooooo much better than failing, as she could have just been a b!tch about it and told me to F off. Lesson learned, read the entire syllabus.

i pulled a 4.0 this semester. yay me.

Had a 4.0 last semester, obviously can't repeat that. Oh well.

i'm only taking a half load and i'm still getting my core stuff done (at age 30, yay me!) tho, so i'm kinda cheating.

Good job. I finally finished my bachelor's degree at age 31.

Lucky bastage! Taking 17 units this semester alone. This course was not the only demise of a 4.0 though.

I would check out the collegiate definition of how the professors must conduct themselves in finals. My sister is going to the same college I attended, and she had a similar issue where the professor wanted to give the final 2 weeks early and she was supposed to be out of town for a few days. I scolded her for not paying attention to the dates on the syllabus (I always put the important dates from each syllabus on my annual calendar the day I received them) and then I suggested she take the issue to the dean, because in our policy it states the requirements of final exams. It stated:
1) Must be for NN percent of grade or more (I think it was 20% minimum for our class)
2) Must cover material taught in class or attained through reading available to every student (textbooks)
3) Cannot be given prior to finals week, up to and including dead week

The number 3 was the kicker, since her professor stated that their final would be 2 weeks early, she took the syllabus to the dean and he gave her a new date during finals week and instructions that the final had to be of the same material given to the rest of the class. The professor also got in a bit of trouble for not taking care of the issue herself following the policy of the college.

I tend to think the professor graded my sister harshly because her friends who took the exam early had much fewer marks on her material, and needless to say my sister won't be taking a class from that professor again... once you screw them over you pretty much steer clear. Look up the policy of your college and see what it says about testing, grades, and finals, and if you do get your way then steer clear of that prof the rest of your collegiate career.

Seems like a lot of work...

In reality, If I had just gone to a few more classes in the middle, I wouldn't be in the situation. No biggie in my mind, just busy work.

This is indeed the policy at most universities... he should check.

I've been a victim to my own stupidity in a similar case. The real lesson isn't just to read the whole syllabus, it's to have one easily accessable at all times. If that means copying and pasting it into an email to yourself and printing multiple copies then do it.

I think the real lesson here is to just go to class.

The policy here is that all students in the class have to sign a paper if they want the final exam at an earlier date.

wow that really sucks then. i'm sure there is an outlook alternative that has reminders and whatnot. i know it helps me a lot to have all of my important dates in one place. i bought a dayplanner and lost it in a week, but i'm on my computer a lot so it works out much better this way.

Wow, you LIVED the nightmare that plagues many college students. I still have nightmares about forgetting that I'm enrolled for a class, not going all semester, and then remembering at the end and freaking out about the final. Sometimes the nightmare is just about missing the final though.

Anyway, at least the prof is letting you fix your mistake. A lesson lived is a lesson learned.

....I just got an email from my professor explaining why I got a low grade on my class ( I sent him an email asking her). She told me that it's because I didn't take the 2nd exam!. I did take (didn't get a good grade on it but I did take it). Now I have to look for it (I don't know where the hell it is, after I got it back I was so frustrated with myself that I don't know where I put it). You'd think that being an scantron exam it'd be easier for them to record the grades but it's not. I just learned this, because I actually got my test back and graded....this is beyond stupidity. Worst thing is, I don't know whose fault it is...mine for not being responsable and archiving my exam or hers for actually not doing a good job when recording the grades (she could have approached me and asked me if I took the exam or done something that one of my professors did which was that I had to sign a paper when I picked up my exam).

Wow. as awesome as missing an exam is....

At least she is letting you make it up, my university won't let you period... The best you could hope for is to find an excuse for a differed exam.

My friend had it pretty bad too. She had a final yesterday and one the previous friday. She heard that she could take the final that was on friday, on wednesday. She assumed that the final would be at the same time which was noon. So she studies for both her finals which are going to happen at 8 am and 12 pm on wednesday. She soon finds out from a friend that her make up final isn't at noon but is also at 8 am! Needless to say, she was screwed.

Also, don't you know anyone in your class....at all? Unless it's a small class.

This is when you use your drop (if your college allows this). Or go to the dean's office and beg to drop and retake the class.
