I give up on Windows networking...

A year ago I setup a home network which worked fine - however, everything came as a package, both computers were using the same make and model NIC, and the hub was made by the same company.
I recently upgraded to an Intel PRO/100+ management adapter (it was recommended by my college), and ow the network is screwy (and not just in Windows2000 - the network is messed up in Win98 too).
When I do manage to transfer files between the two computers they become corrupted (zip files won't unzip, mp3's skip like hell and have the wrong time).
I'm about to give up...what do I need to do?
I beleive the network is running TCP/IP...

Please don't give up so easily Go to http://www.timhiggins.com/networking/lan.htm and buy a couple of good networking books and start learning networking. Networking is so fun.

Don't give up! Networking is a pain when you start out, as it was for me. But it's really fun now as HD2GO says. And I do recommend reading some networking books, don't let Duckers' comments deter you. All knowledge has been passed through books.

First think you might consider doing is installing the NetBeui protocal since it is designed for a windows network. Post your network questions and we'll all help you resolve one by one Try posting networking questions in the networking forum. I find the people there quite knowledgeable and quite willing to help. NetBEUI is installed.
The only real difference between the two computers, besides the NIC's, is that mine DOESN'T have Microsoft Virtual Private Networking installed...
so I did install it, but that didn't fix anything...

(also, whenever I am in Win2K, the other computer can see mine in the network, but clicking on the icon for my computer brings up a password dialogue box. I never set a password...what's going on here?)

In win2k you need to enable the guest account, go into control panel/Users and passwords, click the advanced tab. In advanced user management click advanced, click users in the left window, in the right window right click on the guest and select properties, deselect account is disabled, ok everything and then restart. You won't have the password dialog come up in win98 now..

The only things that i have in the installed for the network are:

Client for microsft networks.
File and print sharing.
Microsoft Netbeui
IPX/SPX compatible protocol(for gaming)

You would TCP/IP for the internet if you have a modem on that machine
