I give up, sharing problem in WinXP Pro

I been having a living hell with WinXp sharing folders and/or printers in my work´s LAN, the main problem is that when I share a resource (printer or folder), some PC's see the resource and some others don't.

Weird Isn't?, I have disabled the simple sharing function in all the PC´s of my LAN and I´m working in a workgroup (no domain), so for example in some cases I have a shared printer and the PC of sales can connect to it no prob at all, but other PC in the LAN with the exact same rights cannot see it until I add his username and password in the PC where the shared printer is installed, I found this annoyng and weird.

Same history with shared folders, even if I give acces to all, in the security and sharing dialog, only the users with administrator rights can access those folders, (and I don't wanna give administrator privileges to everyone of course).

Did, U gus think the reason is that I´m not using a domain instead of a workgroup?

Any Ideas, Suggetions, Comments, will be great appreciated.

Going to a domain model will greatly simplify administration, yes. If you can't go to a domain model, you're going to have some of these headaches. (Although I can't explain all of the problems you claim to have.)

At the very least ensure all your machines are in the same workgroup.

Edman, I'm no Network expert, but had similar problems when I upgraded my home network to XP Pro. One thing I did to eliminate some of my problems was to disable XP's Firewall. The one that comes bundled with the OS. If you haven't done that, that's where I would start. Sorry I'm not more help. Good Luck!!

With a thread title like this I just have to post....


A user won't be able to see a shared resource on another computer, much less access it, unless they have either a username and password set up on the resource hosting computer, or the guest account is enabled and given access to the resource. This can be a pain when trying to manage multiple computers, passwords, and resources seperately. This is why a domain model is nice to have. One user account, and if you change it once the settings are propigated to the other servers quickly.

The guest account is disabled by default, and is recommended to stay that way. The best way to do it is to add a username and password to each computer for the users that you want to give access to. Share the drive, assign those users permissions, or better yet lump them all into one group if the permissions needed are the same. If you are running NTFS partitions you will have a Security tab as well as a Sharing tab for your shared folder.

If you go with the guest route it will prompt you for a password when you try to access the resource remotely. Type in whatever password you gave the guest account and it should let you view and use it.
