Cats are wonderfull pets who can be very independent or very dependent depending on breed or luck. I have had a lot of cats in my life and enjoyed every one of them
My precious Sphynx Bambino , she came from russia with lots of love and purrs

Always liked Sphynx's, how are they temperament wise?
Both mine are "rescues", Loki was given up by his previous owners because he can be a bit of a home wrecker, and Freyja was abandoned by the mother at a really young age and needed a lot of care and attention.
My Loki is an accidental Bengal/Siamese cross, and whilst he looks bengal personality wise he is pure siamese.. Very needy, lots of attention, always stealing the warms, incredibly noisy and not a fan of water.
Freyja was another accidental cross, mother is a british shorthair, she was caught outside by an unknown male, whom we believe is probably a lynx point ragdoll due to the colouration, her little black pointed tufty ears and the fact that she forces people to play fetch.
I love my cats, even if they are a pain in the arse.
I've never had a cat before, I tend to be more of a dog person (especially dachshunds), but my girlfriend had three rescue cats and they didn't get along. Lyla is a very sweet girl, but the other two would beat her up all the time and she literally just sat in the corner or on the window sill looking on at everyone playing and sometimes crying a little. Any attention given to her would immediately draw the other two in who would bully her and make her run off.
Lyla always really liked me and I've been wanting a pet since my dachshunds died in 2010 and the one that didn't die had a mental breakdown when my last one, Emma died. I ended up giving him to a family with several dachshunds and he's happy now. Anyway, my schedule is variable and dogs' schedules aren't, so I went without a pet for a while.
Since Lyla was so miserable, I decided to take her in. I got her last night and man has her personality changed. Super lovey dovey, rolling over for belly rubs constantly, she's a mess. I guess without the constant fear of attack, she can relax and do her thing. Definitely fun to have around.
Shouldn't you take out the cat instead?I wouldn't mind a cat... but I'd take my own life if it started chewing my cords, breaking my shit, clawing me, and toxoplasmosis-ing me.

Good stuff, my family's full of rescue cats in one form or another, and I have a special place for black cats due to ridiculous superstitions (which somehow still exist?). Got two here, one black female, a mane my excellent compatriot male. Both adorable!
It wouldn't be bad to get a playmate (I've found that cats do better in 2+) but that's up to you based on living arrangements and whatnot.
The fact that shelters struggle to rehome black cats can only be linked to superstition... And that's disappointing.
Yep, that's exactly what the shelter we got our black cat from told us, they end up hanging on to them the longest due to that (seemingly). Ours chose us, paw grabbing the ankle style.
Yep, all our shelter cats were black. The three in the lower right were shelter cats. The other three were throw-aways.Yep, that's exactly what the shelter we got our black cat from told us, they end up hanging on to them the longest due to that (seemingly).
