I got a cat

I've never had a cat before, I tend to be more of a dog person (especially dachshunds), but my girlfriend had three rescue cats and they didn't get along. Lyla is a very sweet girl, but the other two would beat her up all the time and she literally just sat in the corner or on the window sill looking on at everyone playing and sometimes crying a little. Any attention given to her would immediately draw the other two in who would bully her and make her run off.

Lyla always really liked me and I've been wanting a pet since my dachshunds died in 2010 and the one that didn't die had a mental breakdown when my last one, Emma died. I ended up giving him to a family with several dachshunds and he's happy now. Anyway, my schedule is variable and dogs' schedules aren't, so I went without a pet for a while.

Since Lyla was so miserable, I decided to take her in. I got her last night and man has her personality changed. Super lovey dovey, rolling over for belly rubs constantly, she's a mess. I guess without the constant fear of attack, she can relax and do her thing. Definitely fun to have around.

Good, I'm glad you put a sto p to it all before thousands in property damage and random acts of violence broke out between the group.

Congratulations! She's a pretty kitty. Enjoy :^)
Thanks. That may be the first thing I've written in my adult life where I used too few commas instead of too many. I blame the lack of coffee.

She was fine last night, but at around 5am she decided we had been sleeping long enough and it was time to roll around on her back and purr for three hours.

Awe, she looks like a sweetie.

We have two cats. One was wandering around the neighborhood, homeless, so we took him in. The other belonged to a friend of my wife's and she couldn't take her and her dog to her new place so she had to give up the cat.

Nice kitty. Cats can make great companions despite their reputation for aloofness.

looks like a cute little cat.

Cats are way more flexible than dogs since they can take care of themselves even if you happen to have a very busy day. Also for holidays if you have someone who can pass by your house and pet them a bit.

Cats can wake you up but if you really need to sleep you can always get up and close them out of the bedroom when they start being a nuisance, unlike dogs which may have an urgent need to piss.

YMMV, one of our cats is the wifes snuggle bug, the other is a bit aloof.
most cats aren't aloof with the family (or at least one member of the family), and also if you buy a cat from a certified breeder this behaviour is less likely, or at least I've never seen it, while random cats and especially rescues can have different behaviour based on their youth.
So the myth maybe comes from the era when cats were barn cats and nothing else, or from people who don't own cats and see the cats being aloof when they're guest in cat owners' homes, not realizing that unlike dogs they take their time to aknowledge intruders.

I wouldn't mind a cat... but I'd take my own life if it started chewing my cords, breaking my shit, clawing me, and toxoplasmosis-ing me.

Aloof might have been a bit of a stretch with the Miracle Cat as the vet calls him, he's just less sociable in general.

He was pretty messed up when we rescued him, the vet even asked if we wanted to put hm down, the wife brought him back more than I.

He likes tummy rubs also when he decides to stop by, so it is not like he is hiding.

He even does an occasional nose bonk to me, I think he believes he is the part time QA inspector.

Both my cats worship me. That's how you can tell they're the smartest pets :^P

The girl was in heaven the other night. I fell asleep in the chair by the fire, so she didn't have to choose between me or the fire. Usually the fire wins, but she'll come to my room to check on me every so often. She got both friday night. Love that animal :^)

I used to have a cat I'd leave home alone for a few days at a time since I traveled three days at a time for work 17 times a year. But I figured he was lonely, so I adopted him a cat for my cat, to keep him company. They became best buddies in a matter of weeks, sleeping together, cuddling together and giving each other baths - so I didn't feel guilty as much leaving them.

I had one cat die from getting hit by a car, one cat probably poisoned and was found just dead in my neighbors yard, and another cat shot with a pellet gun who died from internal damage to his organs. This was all in a nice middle class suburb. I then decided that never again would a cat of mine go outdoors even though our family cat had lived well into her teens going outdoors all the time -

So I adopted once more and kept him indoors, figuring I'd finally have a cat that would live the proper amount of years - and the poor fella had kidney problems and had to be put down last year. He was only like 8 years old, usually kidney problems happen to much older cats. Haven't decided on getting another yet. Oye

I'll always have at least one cat. When it gets to the point I think a cat will outlast me, I'll start getting older cats, and replace as necessary. Old cats need homes too, and nothing lasts forever. Sucks having an animal die, but that's the way it goes.

If I adopt again it probably won't be a kitten, to give a less adoptable older cat a shot. I got a dog a year ago, and he isn't the best with cats. Not terrible but will occasionally give chase. The dog got evicted from my apartment some months back, for no good reason, so he is staying with friends while I shop for a condo. Just not having luck with animals lately it seems

very cute cat, always nice when a non-alpha cat gets a chance to be the center of attention.

yeah my cats don't go out either, it's just too dangerous with cars and people who steal or kill/torture them. Also if they're not neutered they can disappear for days. And they fill your house with small animals, dead, alive or in the form of a thousand feathers. The only advantage is not having to clean the litter much at all but that's not an issue if you have 2 cats max.

The dog giving chase outside doesn't necessarily mean it will do so in the house but if it didn't grow up with cats it's hard to know beforehand how he will behave.

Here are my little monsters.

The "white" one is Freyja, destroyer of fluffy toys, climber of walls, master of the playful squeak and Formula 1 engine noises.
The "brown" one is Loki, defiler of sleep, the all thieving duvet goblin, loud, complaining, always in the freaking way, and nibbler of cables. Did I mention LOUD.

This sums them up pretty well;

OP you are a good person. Thanks for removing her from a bad situation. I just lost my best friend Max after 14 1/2 years. The emptiness and sadness are overwhelming. Love her, take good care of her, and give her a good life.
