Ok this is pure crap in Southern Cali,

I started a new school on Monday so its more than walking distance then the school i went to before.
So it takes me about 15 minutes to ride my back back and forth from school. And on the way back about 5 minutes from my house the "motorcycle cop" makes a left hand turn and tells me to pull over.

This cop is known to pull people on bikes over (has to my friend) and give them a ticket for ridding a bike without a helmet. So hes says that he gave a ticket to another kid before me and it wouldnt be fair not to give me one. He takes all my info down and im pissed as hell because a while back a cop said that you cant get a ticket on a public roadway which i wasnt on.

So now i have to go to court which i dnot know what is going to happen. I mean does this cop have anything else to do? I live in a VERY small city and they think there all tough guys pulling over kids on their bikes.

I feel like telling off the cop next time i see him, makes me so mad!!!

Yeah, what was the citation for? And the story is very vague...i'm assuming you're riding a bicycle.

Edit: Uhhh....you knew the law, so either get a friend to drive you to school, or put on a helmet.

<<You can get a ticket for cussing at a cop. You didn't know that? Forget I said it and go try it>>

I never said cussing, like telling him to go do something more important and that he can stop picking on kids lol

BTW: Thanks for the saying in your sig ragingBich

Don't worry, you'll get out of it. It happened to me. It was the biggest load of crap.

If I have kids, and they ever get ticketed for riding a bike w/o a helmet, I'll hire a lawyer if I have to, but they're not paying that stupid crap.

Anyway, first time is basically a guaranteed dismissal.

Telling off = cussing someone out (in my book anyway)

Actually it depends on the city/county you live in (the cussing thing) - cops at my old high school would hand them out like crazy (not rent-a-cops mind you, but actual cops)

Still might get you in trouble. I wouldn't say he's picking on kids. He's pulling them over (on a bike, too) to enforce a helmet law, for the sake of the community. Now, if he were pulling you over, and say, subjecting you and your backpack to a search every time he sees you, that would be getting picked on

I NEVER said don't fight the ticket . I just said he broke the law And I don't see how i'd be more pissed off, since i don't rely on bikes as a method of transportation.
NewCompGeek: That's life. Some cops just don't want to waste their time, some cops have nothing better to do, and some cops actually cares. I honestly wouldn't care if some moron decides to break their head on the pavement regardless of their age. But the laws the law.

You knew the law and you ignored it. I don't feel any sympathy towards you as far as that's concerned.

You don't like it? Write your state legislator. The law is not about making people who "know how to ride their bike" something to worry about. It was made to save lives. Do you NEED a helmet all the time? No... because normally you can keep things under control. But ACCIDENTS happen. You're not the ONLY moving thing out there. And when an accident happens. your head's going to be splattered all over the curve.

Fight the ticket. You'll probably get a warning the first time. But don't cry to us expecting sympathy when you get caught for breaking the law.

Wear a helmet next time and you won't have to worry about this cop.

note that the ordinance only applies to people under 18 -- legally non-adults. i'm not supporting this particular circumstance or anything, but the reasoning is different with regard to minors. 18's a pretty arbitrary age for adulthood, and people mature at vastly different rates, but the boundary has to be set somewhere so that policy can be made, and there we have it.

that said, i'm a big fan of the Darwin Awards and i honor the recepients that have removed themselves from the gene pool -- but kids are not elligeable for a reason. yeah, it's all arguable on the basis that some minors are tried as adults in certain crimes, but i hope noone really wants to get into a discussion on it.

read The Social Contract sometime NewCompGeek; it contains concepts that i think, if you grasp them, you'll be ahead of many legally adult americans.

sux bout your citation dude.

Hmmmm.... I have kids, and if they ever get ticketed for riding w/o a helmet, they'll have to explain it to me as well as the judge.

I hope the judge lets you off, but you should spend the money on a helmet and wear it.

At the risk of sounding like a duma$$, Why don't you wear a helmet??? After years of mountain biking I wouldn't even think of riding without one.

And if you were my kid, I would make you pay the ticket and put on a helmet
