someone gave me this old POS mac. its allegedly a "performa 6200CD". it sucks because it was before apple decided to make all their products edible-looking.
Anyways... I havent the faintest clue how to use this thing. When it comes to Macs, i imagine myself looking like my grandfather while he tries to figure out how to calibrate the 18456-button joystick he got for x-mas. Based on the model number, can anyone tell how old it is? am i looking at something useable? at all?

...and can anyone tell me where i might be forgetting to check for the power button? ive practically done a full cavity search on this POS and havent found anything that brings it to life

UPDATE its on and its littered with whatever garbage her little kids put on it. how to reformat?

Hehe. Well, some of the really old ones have the power button on the keyboard. Good luck finding it.

First check to see if it is a collector's item. If not then deposit it in the nearest dumpster. That's my advice.

I replied because I wanted to. They're fun to play around with. This isn't general hardware, so it's assumed you're looking for some OT comments.

And, yes, try looking for a keyboard power-on switch.

Hahaha, just throw it away since you obviously can't use it.

Power button on keybaord in the upper right...I think. It's got a triangle on it. And there's a switch on the back of the machine too, make sure it's on as well

My first "real" computer was a Pentium 133 with a 1 GB hard drive. Which I got around the same time that Mac came out give or take a few months.

I'm sure he did. Move this to PM, bucko, if you really care that much.

My first PC had a whopping 80 MB hard drive. I had Win95 and Red Alert installed, and I had just enough space left for 3 savegames in Red Alert. An attempt to create a 4th savegame would result in a "HDD full" error message.

540MB was more than fine for games like "Lords of the Realm II", which IMO is still one of the best games ever.

Then I discovered MP3s.

If you have recovery CD, put it in and reboot. While it is starting up, hold the 'c' key, this should boot to the CD and allow you to restore the mac to it's factory state.
