Yeah, yeah..."yippie for you" I can hear you saying

My old motherboard, in my signature is 970A

My new motherboard is a GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD3

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128514

Now...what are the chances that I can just plug in my SSD from my old computer into this motherboard and it works without having to reinstall Windows?

IF I DO have to reinstall, is there a way I can migrate my programs over to the new computer without having to re-download and install them from scratch? I have "C" Drive already backed up onto an external.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Since I'm not an AMD aficionado, I'm only guessing. Same manufacturer; similar chipset? Same processor.

I'd say -- try it -- see if it boots. If it boots to windows, install the new chipset and other drivers.

I would say quite good.
If you're going to AMD..Y U no Sabertooth or CHV?

Sabertooth or CHV? I Googled Sabertooth, but all I got was links to prehistoric creatures like the one in Ice Age voiced by Dennis Leary

Thank you for the link, looks like good reading.

SIMILIAR chipset, yes and the plan is to try and see if it works or not

Start it in safe mode delete the old drivers, then install new ones. You don't have to do a new install every time. You will have to validate Windows again or what eva...Most will suggest a new install. I swap out motherboards a lot, never had an issue also long as I clean out drivers then install new drivers, then Re-activate windows.

I'm with Philly on this. If the successor mainboard has a chipset and especially SATA controller that is successor to the one on the previous mainboard, it should boot. You should be able to simply install the new drivers. If there's a problem, I suppose I'd try safe mode.

Somebody else mentioned SYSPREP, which would probably be the most thorough and risk-free way of making the transition.

MAJOR UPDATE...SYSPREP WORKED!!!

HOWEVER...after swapping motherboards, now my system takes MINUTES to get to my desktop, whereas before, on my old motherboard (still in signature) it took an estimated 20 to 30 seconds from pushing the power button to get to a workable Desktop.

I do not have AHCI enabled, but I never did, and I don't know if that matters or not...all I know is that my SSD is worth as much as a regular hard drive.

Any suggestions? Someone at worked told me to update the BIOS, and there are also instructions on how to enable AHCI after Windows install, but either way, I don't want to turn this PC into a brick

The bouts process is divided up into several stages, some of which are mostly HD/SSD dependent (the time between the time the windows logo shows up and you hit the desktop) and the rest of which are dependent mostly on you motherboard and RAID controllers (all the stuff that happens before you see the Windows logo.)

If it's the Windows loading part, it's time to reinstall windows. (in AHCI mode this time.) If it's the motherboard part, there are probably configuration optios that will make that go by faster.

Well...went into regedit, and found that the value IS set to 0 under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\msahci

I guess it's time for a re-install.

I don't want to, but I guess it's warranted now due to the piss poor performance of this Samsung SSD
