So I got a speeding ticket a couple weeks ago.. pretty rough but it had to happen eventually (speed trap, not wreckless/etc).. whatever..

So I've been driving pretty carefully lately (read: watching out for cops and watching my speed more closely).. yesterday i leave a friends house close to midnight.. dead quiet/dead outside.. i pull up to a light and no one's coming so i make a right turn.. at about 25mph.. nothing special/different than i ever do. I see lights pull out of a gas station then fly up behind me and the red and blue come on..

"Do you know why I pulled you over?" "No idea.." "You didn't stop at that red light before turning." "But no one was coming." "You still have to STOP." Okay.. maybe he was just checking to see if I was some asshole driver.. I had the music going, top down.. enjoying the late night breeze..

Comes back with the ticket.. tells me basically to plead not guilty if I have a clean record and he'll say I just rolled through it, told me I have a nice car and good luck with it and take care..

.. freakin ruined my night..

just ranting..

That sucks, but if the cop said that then hopefully he'll follow through on his promise.

Eh, it's still illegal. I used to do it all the time until I got into a wreck 3 years ago. Now, I'm more careful about obeying every traffic law.

Rolling through stop signs and red lights is a little dumb. Why put yourself at risk for a ticket over something so simple? It's a bad habit to get into.

What kind of promise is that though? From a judge's point of view, a lawbreaker is a lawbreaker and they're money hungry bitches. They don't really care what you did or how you did it as long as you broke the law. I doubt you'll get lucky because the only thing a judge does is sit up there and review people who got traffic violations....that's a crappy gig.

Sucks that you got stuck with a ticket. Pay it....court costs will be as much as the ticket, but if you wanna try to save on insurance, chance it with the judge...you might come out ok if you have the time for a court date. Good luck.

This has never been something weird.. If I don't see any cars coming (literally not a single one) I don't feel necessary to just come to a complete stop.. stare for a minute.. then drive.. If there's any traffic I always stop.. but I never knew this was a law.

You never knew stopping at a red light was a law?

I guess some people think it's just a suggestion.

don't act like you all stop completely at every red light before making a right turn if there's no traffic coming i know it's a law but i didn't think it was a ticketable offense kind of thing.. like using your blinkers to change lanes and whatnot.

are the hypocrites coming out?

Every traffic law is a ticketable offense.. including no blinker usage.

But when's the last time someone got pulled over for doing 2mph over the limit, if you can't see what my point was i'll be sure not to bother responding anymore

I think the reason many of the replies aren't supporting you is that going through a red light at 25mph isn't the same as going 2mph over the speed limit. Not even close.

Unlike the speeding hyprocrites (*cough* rbloedow *cough*), I actually stop at every red light. You never know when a car may be coming out of nowhere or there might be a pedestrian. I would NEVER roll through one at 25mph... you deserved that ticket so quit bitching.

I've had friends get tickets for both....

If its a law, and you don't follow it, you can get a ticket....

Going 2 mph over the speed limit is hard to detect anyways because the speed checks aren't that accurate.

I was making a right turn at 25mph, i didn't run through the red light, i did slow down before the turn from 45mph, and saw no one coming, so i made the turn.. in my car 25mph is very normal for making a turn. I don't see what the problem is.
