Probably sent it to see if you read it (Read receipt). This way they know it's an active email account and now you will get spam from them.

I've gotten e-mails like that. I always assumed the text was from something else designed to show up on as many web searches as possible. No idea why anyone would send it as an e-mail though.

they're not after read receipts - all they have to do is ping it to every username combination they can come up with. the ones that don't get returned means the username for that domain is valid, and is entered into their spam list.

Except that returns will also have the error message, which they could check for and if it's from a spam engine then they still know it's real.

Boxtrapper for the win.

I was getting a kick out of the recent "CNN Top 10" spam burst, I thought it was just a variation on the "shocking news subject line" crap. Then I found out it was an attempt to fool users into installing an 'upgraded' version of flash - that's damn slick.

This is the best case scenario, probably put forth by Quintox because he feels sorry that you have sealed your mortal fate . . . for YOU have now opened a prime example of the e-ebola virus (see what I did there?)

Within 48 hours, your penis will shrivel and die while your breasts will swell to the size of a D-cup. If you do not decide to kill yourself from this humiliation, you will have to shop for an entirely new wardrobe and negotiate a completely different relationship with your wife.

Will I be ok if I buy the penis enlarger from the other email?

Probably meant to foil bayesian filters. Presumably the message will be marked as spam, assigning some probability mass to those words, slightly increasing the chances of false positives (user needs to go through spam folder, chance they'll read other spam messages), and false negatives (chance they'll read it since it's in their inbox). Even if it increases clickthrough by .01%, that could translate into $1000.

Together with the premium version of the "hearken difluoride thyratron", which reduces breast size by somehow frightening your nipples into oozing sub-cutaneous fat, yes.

It's the death e-mail. 7 days after you read it, you drop dead with no explanation! Hope you didn't have a big date planned for the 15th (or after)!!

This.

They're trying to make the spam filters less effect.
