ONLY down side at the moment is the encoding is limited to only 320x240 so it doesn't take the full advantage of the 480x272 resolution. The movies have 4 display options and so you can watch widescreen stuff in widescreen. The people just look tall and thin but when you watch it on the PSP with the 'widescreen' option the people look normal again.

this is probably a stupid question but you're playing the movies from the memory stick right?

how much space do you have on the stick?

I have a 512MB MS DUO Pro and the 32MB that comes with the VALUE PACK.

There is a 1GB MS DUO Pro out and one by SanDisk should be out at launch or sooner. MSRP ~ $160 but it should drop on it.

280MB for nearly 2hrs is not bad. So 3 films on a 1GB MS isn't bad imo but they should make a 2GB MS DUO Pro sometime or better yet a 4Gb one more is better.

Load times:
Ridge Racer feels fine with loads time.
The Vampire Chronicles: Choas Tower IS noticeably slower but you just deal with it.

It is up to the manufactures to make the load times better.

Battery life is about 8-10hrs with movies from the MS Duo Pro. 3-4hrs from the UMD when they release movies on it.

Their is also a USB CABLE CHARGER. So once your at work or near a pc you can hook it in and it will start to charge the PSP.

so is there any noticeable performance hit during movie playback from using the memory stick as opposed to from the umd?

Performance hit?

The battery life will be longer BUT as of now you can only encode 320x240 resolutin and not 'fuly' utilse the full resolution of the PSP which is a fat 480x272.

How's the X-button treating you? Seems like Sony is getting a ton of complaints on that and basically saying, "Oh well, it had to be done."

Also, any mention of region coding in the manual like the US manual has right now? Sony has said games wont be region coded but would not comment on other/future media.

Ebgames.com and IGN.com will answer these questions.

I played on my friend's Nintendo DS, and thought it was fun. But looking at the graphics and the humongous screen on this thing, added to the fact that it'll sell for ONLY 150$, I'm gonna wait for the PSP. Jees, I dont care if the battery life is 5hrs. For a screen like that, I'm willing to let that thing recharge once a day.

Does anyone know the price for sure in the states? I've heard 150 and 300-350ish. For 150 I'll probably end up buying one, but for 300 its questionable...

It was the 'square' button I have been hearing about.

All my buttons work fine and no dead pixels.

It will be region free. I think the manual just does that so that you know you can 'only' get 'movies on UMD and music' via that region.

I'm in England so same as the Japanese Region 2 so I am fine.

Games will be fine. They would be CRAZY to screw with it.

It will be $150 for the 'normal' package and $200 for the 'value' kit.

$150 for normal package?
DS is $200 and it's not a better machine than PSP.
I'll for sure get one at $150.

Does anyone know if PSP can surf the web? How does it work? Does SONY buy license from MS for Internet Explorer?

The DS is $150 and the PSP is $250 at launch(they are only shipping "value packs"). Good luck finding a PSP for $250 as of now, most places are in to the forced bundle phase of preorders($400 give or take with three games and the 'value pack').

Does anyone know if PSP can surf the web?

Not currently supported, and I'm not sure that it is likely to be. The DS is going after the PDA market, the PSP is going after the iPod's.

5-6hrs with RR and the battery ACTUALLY LASTS PROPERLY unlike my iPod's. You leave the iPod with no use.

Sony are going to have 1 million units by launch and they are ramping up production. If they can make plenty for the Japanese now so I don't see a shortage for xmas. They should be able to make more without any iffy shipping cock ups.

I wouldn't sell your iPod to use the PSP solely as your mp3 device. The way it handles music is a bit sh!tty so far. You have to put music in to folders! wtf is up with that?! It doesn't support play lists which sucks imo. BUT hopefully Sony will get a firmware up.

DS for the pda market? I don't think so. Who in the hell is going to pull out a DS for a pda?

PSP for iPod? No. The iPod is much more streamlined for music playback then the PSP is so far with the current firmware. I can play music on my phone and psp but I use my iPod as it is just easier.

The PSP is 'most' properly going to have net access. People were downloading this 'leaked' firmware update from Sony's site which was ONLY MEANT for developers. If it does that would be cool BUT at the end of the day wireless net access in England is a bit patchy and costs too much for me. Sony is also bringing out a mini usb keyboard.

I just pre-ordered WipEout Pure so that should be here within 4 weeks

Just pre-orderd mine. The games look to be about the quality of PS2 games (keep in mind that you are dealing with a smaller resolution).

Can't wait to play Thug 2 on the go...
