Hello friends. You might remember me from a couple days ago when I had a question about 5.1 surround sound. Wellll let me assure you, a LOT has changed since then! I've secured some klipsch promedia 5.1 ultras, but there's a problem. Well, there's maybe a problem.

I've got to turn them up to about 55 (out of a possible 80) before they're at a comfortable volume. Does anyone else have these speakers? What do you listen to them at normally? I've heard tell of these possibly having an amp defect. Whats the story with that? could it be my crappy onboard soundcard (I know, I know, i already ordered a better one) Lots of questions. Okay, talk to you later.

Do they get really really unbearable loud by the time you get to max?

What happens if you hook them up to another sound source? (like a portable cd player... and make sure to check the volume on the cd player too if you do that)

Are the volume sliders up in your sound utility program?

Firstly, I don't get the volume rating... how does it work? I don't see any number when I adjust volume on my PC.

Second of all... 50 out of 80 seems a bit high to have to get to comfortable. I have a cheaper 5.1 setup and I barely have to turn my volume knob up to get to a comfortable listening level. Do you use the volume slider on your PC or the knob on your speaker to control volume? Make sure that both of them are set to the right level (maybe one the highest and use the other one to control).

There's a volume number display on his actual speakers.

55 out of 80. Is that surprising? Depends on the playback source.

If you are listening to MP3s, yes I am surprised. Because computer sound cards automatically boost wave sources more than ten times the original volume. If you are listening to mp3s or listening to a CD, and you are at 55 of 80, you need to check your computer master volume either at the control panel or your sound card drivers (assuming they are synchronized with the control panel). This is assuming you are in a small room. If you are in a larger room (say at least 15x15x10) then no, I'm not surprised. Volume dissapates with distance.

If you are listening to DVDs, no I am not surprised. Your computer does not boost DVD sources, so you are listening at about 1/12 of the volume of an mp3 at similar Klipsch volume numbers. The Klipsches don't provide enough power (given the satellite sensitivity) and the satellites don't provide satisfactory midrange SPL levels if you are watching a DVD, particularly at HT listening distances. Bring your satellites CLOSER...or realize its time to upgrade to real speakers.

For example...on my receiver, playing mp3s at about -30db is a confortable listening volume. On SOME DVDs, I find myself turning it up to about to about +1db...that's a significant swing (on a max of +12). Some sources are amplfied, some aren't.

Yeah I've got all these volume slider issues under control, they're all up.

I'm beginning to suspect my crappy onboard audio out, but I said I have a new card on the way, so if I hook that up and things are still fishy, then I dunno...

If anyone out there actually has these same speakers, it'd be helpful to hear what number you're listening at. I don't think the number is a rating of anything, just an arbitrary scale from 0 to 80.

I would rather have sex with a beautiful woman who wasn't famous, AND win an NBA Championship , rather than the above

Uh...wtf? You don't get it, obviously. If you had seen how he reacted after winning it, you'd understand.

I think Robert Horry stealing the game ball after while everyone else was scrambling for interviews was the highlight of Game 7 and probably the series ^^

Read the rest of the thread watek : P

Even with my parents Denon 3805, I find myself turning it up to about 70% volume on certain movies for dialogue. I'll tell you one thing, the reason is certainly not a LACK of power amplification...because I can hear the the tweeters hiss like an army of snakes and I know they are at the point of overloading.

All i've really used them on so far is listening to mp3s of all different bitrates in iTunes. That new soundcard should be here tomorrow. I'm hoping that takes care of it.
