Sorry if someone is offend by me saying happy holidays during Oct to New Years eve, well that is their problem, not mine.
Far too many people CHOOSE to be offended. My post is an attempt to poke fun at the ridiculous things some people choose to be offended about, especially considering there are LOTS of holidays in the month of December.

But only one real one.

What I hate is the fact that some organizations are forced to NOT say Merry Christmas or have decorations etc because it might offend people. Screw those people that get offended at every little thing, I will say Merry Christmas if I please and put as many decorations up as I want. There are a lot of situations in public places where people arn't even allowed to do it. It's sad really. I fear that eventually this will spread to the general population, like they will ban nativity scenes in front yards etc. Christophobic is really a good word for it, because these types of rules always target Christians specifically. Muslims and other religions are always welcome.
What, like people that get offended because someone says Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas?

OK as I was getting my meds this morning and going back to my apartment, I said "Happy Holidays" to a lady and she went off on me. She was saying that I should put Christ back in Christmas as that the reason for the season.

I mean good grief, this is the first time I experienced this and I live in a town with lots of churches. Then I mentioned this to guy I was riding with my med cab going to groups. He was upset that people were saying Xmas as he thought was taking Christ out Christmas.

Now I have always said Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and Xmas all my life and this is the first time I even ran into anyone who took offense to two out of the three.

Have you guys ever run into this before?

Some people really need to grow up (like that lady). I think I would have responded with, "if you think that Christmas is about the birth of Jesus, then perhaps you should make more effort to celebrate it at the correct time of year".

I haven't. Should have said "way to turn the other cheek".

I'm wondering how many Christians would get that reference any more.

Probably not that many. It quite common for new religions to take over the old religions holidays and rename them once they get bigger.

I have had a few people say Merry Christmas to me in an unusually aggressive manner. Almost like they wanted me to disagree.

I like those people, to them I say 'no it isn't' and wait to figure out if they think my comment was about me (it's not merry) or about them (it's not Christmas). It's amazing how much people make asshats of themselves when you just let them talk unhindered.

Now that you mention it, I ran across a few people like that when I used to bell ring for the Salvation Army years ago. Including one one guy who made a big deal about not buying Xmass lights from China.

I worked at a Jewish owned mom and pop grocery store from my early teens until I graduated college. I was a bagger and would take groceries to people's cars so there was a lot of interaction with customers. I always would say "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas" simply because you had a lot of Jewish people shopping there (as well as other religions). I never had one person get mad at me over the 8-9 years I worked there.

Maybe taking a step back and looking at the big picture, it seems to be a pretty good example of the way society has devolved.

In the good old days, there was no shortage of crabby people, but there seemed to be more civility if not tolerance. Perhaps grandma felt that Merry Christmas was more appropriate, but she would most likely take it as a nice gesture.

Today everyone has an ax to grind, an agenda that that they want to force upon you and will not hesitate to be crude and hurtful.

It seems as though anyone who has the opportunity to voice an opinion in the media will do so. They seem to overjoyed at their righteousness when they find the most viscous words possible to denigrate those whose opinions differ from their own.

It's because people are so entrenched in social media and saying whatever thing comes to their mind that they have stopped considering other people in person. Society is in the middle of a complete downfall. No one respects anyone anymore and thinks their beliefs/opinions are better/more important than everyone else. I've just come to the conclusion that many people are very unhappy in their lives and want to 'win' at something...anything.

I think social media just makes it convenient to be be intolerant and devoid of empathy. There was a sea change in mindset that I believe predated social media.

My personal belief is that much of it stems from political correctness, a good intention that has swelled out of proportion and has created a backlash. You can only get in people's faces for so long before they push back.

It kind of reminds me of religious fundamentalism. Unquestionable certainty in the superiority of your beliefs allows for little regard for the beliefs of others.

I think in a way this can be unintentional also. I grew up in a predominately white christian society. However this has changed significantly. I see it especially in the IT sector. I have worked with guys from all over asia. Including muslims from indonesia. Who actually seem to follow a very moderate form of islam generally. As in they identify as muslim but are non practicing.

Anyway. Where am I going with this? Ah yes take giving an iranian a christmas ham, our employer didn't mean to be offensive. We just live in a white christian society who's demographic has changed rapidly but it's still a white christian society. This stuff doesn't change overnight. There was a time where non whites were effectively banned from immigrating to australia. It was known as the white australia policy and took ~30 years to completely dismantle.

In the end murad just laughed the gifting of christmas ham off anyway. He didn't shout admiral ackbar as we all ran for the exits.

Back when people tuned in to see this guy:

Instead of this guy:

Yeah, I was alive. To be honest, the good old days were far from perfect, but things seemed to be improving.

Is it based upon Reality or TV Shows?

The OP chose to relate to us how strangers treated him this holiday season and I guess I hijack the thread a bit to reflect on how people treat each other has changed over time.

Nonetheless, it is about reality. TV is one way in which we can gain a perspective on society over time. Not saying it is the best or only way to judge society.

How about you. Have you been around long enough to witness any societal changes?

Two people have done that to me. I just say, "Sorry, you look kinda Jewish." I can see the storm gathering in their head until I think they realize they can't insult Jews.

You gotta have empathy for people who watch Fox "News" all day long.

I try to get my news from many sources so I don't get stuck in a bubble. And I'm not in the habit of believing everything I read.

I have noticed changes. Some are better, some are worse, some are merely the perceptual differences between childhood naivete and adult experience.
