Huckleberry pie >>> blueberry pie. Though, blueberry pie is pretty good. Blueberry pie made with the really big blueberries that you get in the produce dept of the store kind of sucks. They need to be small blueberries. If you suggest using canned blueberries, or canned anything (I'll make an exception for pumpkin), since that's by far the most common way to get pumpkin pie, you have no taste in food.

Quoted for truth. Ripe small blueberries are the BEST for blueberry pie.

Blueberries (and any wild berry for that matter) are far, far better fresh. Baking them in a pie involves adding way too much sugar. That's the reason pies very so much-some commercial pies are basically just colored sugar paste.

PS-wild blueberries are to supermarket berries as homegrown tomatoes are to those red things the supermarket stocks in the winter.

You are officially my new hero! Huckleberry is on my bucket list.

Fun fact: the huckleberry is the wild plant from which the domesticated blueberry was bred, by Elizabeth White, in New Jersey of course, where all good things happen.

Strawberry Rhubarb

Agreed....my mother is from Maine and it's pronounced "Rhubaaaaahhhb".

As far as the blueberry pie being bad....I've actually had a really good one that was thickened with tapioca flour that was featured in a really nice restaurant. I obtained the recipe from the chef, but never made it. There are many varieties of blueberries and the best ones are wild maine blueberries or "huckleberries" if you're in Idaho or Utah. (though blueberries can grow in those regions, the huckleberries probably reign supreme in flavor and texture and could be substituted. I know what you mean about the seeds...but they aren't as bad when the blueberries are those smaller varieties...and not the cultivated ones people tend to buy that are grown commercially.

EDIT: Just read above that others feel the same way. Haha....good to know other ATOT folks know their berries.

I think more people dislike pumpkin pie than like it honestly. I know in my small family I am the only one that likes it (but I actually love it, could eat it every day). Maybe it is a genetic thing like cilantro.

I feel like no matter how many people dislike it, it's ALWAYS at everyone's Thanksgiving. Unfortunately for me, my family literally fights over the last slice. I'm the white elephant in the room asking for more chocolate cream pie or cheesecake. In the end, it works out for me.

No, they only involve adding way too much sugar if you're making them wrong. There's no reason to make pies as sweet as candy, if you taste your filling before building the pie you can adjust sweetness levels so that the pie tastes like it's filled with natural fruit.

That's funny. My wife's family pretty much across the board hates pumpkin pie. They do however always fight over the last slice of chocolate pie every Thanksgiving. I'm not much of a chocolate pie fan myself, so one of the family members took pity on me years ago and started making a pumpkin pie for the Thanksgiving dinner. I usually just eat the whole thing myself (I take most of it home with me) and watch the rest of the family fight over the chocolate.

 this, so this. We picked 16 pounds of blueberries the other day and froze them into half pound portions into vacuum sealed packs.

Our chief complaint was the quality of store bought blueberries being not ripe enough or too tart. So different that fresh picked. U barely need sugar with fresh picked and the pies made from this are outstanding.

Want to swamp families this Thanksgiving? I'll bring an extra chocolate.

That reminds me... I need to get down to the blueberry place down the street from my house. They have acres upon acres of blueberry bushes. When you walk in, the guy says, "feel free to eat all you want. We don't spray them with chemicals." And they honestly mean that - eat as many as you want while picking - you could go there every day and pick 5 pounds to take home, and eat as many pounds as you can while you're there, and they're fine with it. Hell, you can take your whole family, spend 2 hours eating, and leave with a couple pounds and everything's okay.

I'm down to just a couple bottles of blueberry wine - I need enough berries for 2 carboys (12 gallons) of wine.

Blueberry and apple are tied for my favorite. I also favor chocolate cream pie, but finding one with a good crust is a challenge. Cherry pie is good. Beyond these I have little interest.

Blueberry pie is the best! I remember going blueberry picking a lot with my grandma as a kid. She'd make a whole bunch of pies when we got back, in the morning she'd also make pancakes with blueberries in them. It was awesome.

Where I am, meat based pies are crazy popular and I don't get it. Not only are they unhealthy (full of bad quality meat and salt) but they have weird combos. Like steak and cheese pies....ugh.

Bad quality?? You probably mean fatty meat.

Anyway, you havent lived until you tried steak and kidney pie!
