I love chiclet keyboards. I replaced all my desktop keyboards with them. The biggest plus for me is how silent they are compared to the older style.

Most good keyboards are gonna be moderately noisy at the very least. Silent keys typically have very little to no travel.

I can tell you right now that the keyboard on my ThinkPad is the best I have used in any laptop, but it's definitely noisier than the crappy chiclets I'm used to seeing in consumer laptops. For desktops I've found it's the same thing.

The alienware M14X falls into yoru price range.

Best backlit keyboard there is (and choose your color)

No damn chicklets.

One of the best keyboards I have typed on.

Done the thinkpad route as well as the Macbook pro along the
way over the years.

I LOVE my alienware keyboard.

Newer Thinkpad keyboards are not as good as the ones from the old days like the T42 or X20s. Compared to everything else out there Lenovo is keeping the lead in providing tactile feedback. I h473 the (#1(|<137 crap keyb0rds on lappies today. The HP Elitebook line has decent keyb0rds and I've been pleased with HP business service when needed, which has been rare.

I'm bringing this thread back up for any advise. Replacing an elitebook 6930p and trying to get close on the keyboard. Spent some time today at a major retailer and nothing was any good but alienware. However this is for work (law professor) so a glowing head is unacceptable. How are current elitebook and probook keyboards? Don't love the new thinkpad chiklet and really need two trackpad buttons.

Fujitsu lifebooks generally also have non-chiclet keyboards, but I don't know if they beat Thinkpads

sorry for dragging up an old thread, altho seems to have been bumped

Fujitsu A531 - note, nice(r) keyboards, BUT, there is a serious issue with the space bar. if you dont hit it centre/top, it doesnt register. I'm currently trying to decide whether the keys make up for the bad space bar, or if the space bar is critical (7 days old, for a return)

If synaptics could make it so a thumb-tap on the touchpad acted as a space.......that would be good.

The packard bell easynote 'te' has a semi-decent keyboard too. apart from one of the hp pavilions, i cannot find any other sub £450 laptops with chunkier keys.

Can you find a program that allows programming of keys?

Alienware Keyboard.

One of the features on it that took me by surprise.
I agree with you, I cannot get another laptop without it having a
keyboard other than a chiclet.

I keep my laptop at least 3+ years, screen and keyboard are big issues for me as
this is what I will be looking at and interacting with during that time.

Make NO compromise on these 2 issues.

Anyone that was around that still remembers the days back when Laptops had decent mechanical keyboards? Yes but that was two decades ago -_- and I hate how keys also easily break off.
