ATM's have gone beyond 'mainstream' and into 'being removed'. It's increasingly difficult to find ATMs round here, as it seems there's a push to do away with cash.

It's a business process thing. The Federal Reserve operates on business days and since all clearance happens through them, you have to sync to business days.You'd think by now financial stuff could just happen 24/7. Servers never go on vacation. I guess bank IT systems are very far behind the times and require lot of manual interventions such as inserting punch cards to make transactions happen.
