And you probably think Chicago is part of your state.

I'm not sure if you're poking fun or not, but no - Chicago is about an hour and a half drive.

Where do you live in NC? I grew up here and I think the people are great.

What part of IN? It seems that most Nothern IN people claim Chicago as the main city of their state.

I wonder the people you've been talking to. I've spent the majority of my life living in NW Indiana, very close to Chicago. No one there ever considered Chicago part of Indiana. East Chicago is a city in Indiana, though.

South Bend. And I've never known a single person who thought Chicago was in Indiana. lol

I grew up in a suburb of Milwaukee, and for several years was convinced that Wisconsin was the worst place to live. Sometime during high school I realized that it's actually a pretty cool area to live.

As far as other places people have suggested... I visited a friend who had recently moved to the Durham area during high school... the people there were really unfriendly. I think if I were going to move somewhere that didn't have humid summers and snowy winters, I'd check out the Pacific Northwest. I've never actually been there, but that would be my first choice.

Indiana sucks, I feel your pain.

I've lived here all my life and in 6 short months I'll be gone forever.

Where you moving to?

Chicago

Moving from Indiana to Chicago is like going from an out-house to a port-o-potty. Chicago sucks.

Anyway, maybe you like it better than I do.

Dude Chicago is cool now Gary could be classified as a shathole

Ausm

I grew up just outside of Gary. I could see the sign: "Welcome to Gary, a friendly city, a friendly people" with bullet holes and rust from down the street where I lived.

Seriously though, Chicago is cold, dirty, windy, stinky, has horrible traffic and just sucks. The only thing good about Chicago is some of the food.

Haha.. um I'd venture to say Chicago has much more culture and things to offer me than Indiana or Phoenix for that matter. I love cold weather and I love the arts, food, etc. My sister lives in Chicago and needs someone to support her and I just accepted a job there with a great salary so I can help her out.

Washington or Oregon.
I've lived in So. Cal., S. Carolina, Virginia, Arizona, Chicago, Cleveland, NYC and Boston.

I'd say Boston but not with those winters.

I'm surprised how many people think IL/Chicago is nice. It's not! In the winter the temperature rarely gets below 20 degrees, but the wind makes it feel like it's -20. Brrr.... You have to idle the car for 2-5 minutes before you can drive it. The summers are average, they may be cool, but they may be hot and humid and stay that way for months at a time. Three years ago (i think) we had a particularly bad one, three thunderstorms in a row each night, but the trmperature still close to a 100 next day! The highways are the worst though. Can you believe the official speed limit on the highways is 55 here? Come on, are you fvscking kidding me? I drove faster than that during my first time behind the wheel. And highways themselves are a joke, bumps and potholes all the way, seriously I've driven through ~8-10 states and IL is the worst. And not to mention Blagojevich and his stupid laws that made driving even worse. Apparently the left lane now is only for passing trafic and since the majority of highways in IL are three lane, that effectively makes them two lane. Then his tolls idea, I don't use highways that much but I had to buy that fvsking pass because the tolls are now twice as expensive than the pass. So it's either pay premium each time you use tollways or unconditionally loan your state $50 free of interest. Bastards. And then, the most recent invention, speeding cameras in trucks on highway in construction zone who will enforce the stupid speed limit. Of course, how do I know they won't tamper with it? Who prevents them from shooting me while I'm going 38 and claiming I'm driving 55? The fines are just stupid as well, $300+ for the first offense, $1000 for the second and possible license revocation. While we are on topic of fines, they just recently proposed to raise fines for parking in the handicapped space up to $500. Seiously the greed knows no limits. Three-four years ago I used to go to Indiana Dunes to the beaches, not anymore. They started construction along 294/94 two years ago, and are still at it. They had two years and they still can't fix the damn road? Ironically enough, the traffic is now even worse than before they started construction. The traffic jam now extends 5 miles into Indiana! What previously took 75 minutes to get to Indiana Dunes now takes three hours. I like it there, but I'm not about to waste 6 hours going there and back. The gas prices are also among the highest in the nation, there was a thread not so long ago about gas prices dropping below $2 per gallon, not here! It's still at least $2.25 for the regular. And guess the average parking meter fee in downtown Chicago? 25 cents for 15 minutes. Ridiculous. And the job market isn't all that hot, at least for IT. The cost of housing/medical on the other hand is among the highest in the nation. Anyway, as soon as I have a degree and as soon as the first opportunity presents itself, I'm gone!

You can leave. First...how many cars do you actually see going 55MPH on the highway? I've never been pulled over and I always go around 70MPH on the highways. Second, construction workers suck EVERYWHERE. You think that construction in NY gets done in no time? Ask someone in Boston about their fun 10+ year construction thing. Third, 25cents/15minutes is only in the super tourist area where parking is super hard to find.

I just moved out of Hammond. You want cheap living you need to move here by me
Look at my sig and see what I bought and there are other homes in that price range, lower, and some higer.

As for crime forget it its a really small town. As for schoold probab,y the best ever for my kids. No gangs, and since there is really only walmart close the kids cannot be made fun of for what they wear since everyone is wearing the same stuff from the same store
Traffic, HA, unheard of. Out traffic jam consists of an old geezer doing 45 in a 55.

And again about the homes. Several homes in great condition out here have been selling for $10K-$150. There is a really nice home here going for $20K 3 bdr 1400 sqft. Asking is $20K. $20K loan over 30 years is $93 a month. If you cannot afford $93 a month to live is a home you will own something is wrong with you

Anyway if you need more information dont hesitate to ask. The old people here in the town are dieing off and thier homes are being sold for silly money.

before I made any recommendations, I'd need to know...

How old are you?
Plans to get married?
Plans to have children?
Occupation?

For what it's worth, if you have children, the best states in the nation for education are located in the Northeast, plus Iowa, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. (I didn't make the list)

I've been researching quite a few of these lists in education lately and am surprised to see that Nevada is actually ranked lower than Mississippi and Alabama! Also, in California, their state science standards are atrocious. If someone wants links to specific studies, pm me. I've got links on a different computer (that I'm not at right now.)
