Not necessarily, but, in any event, I am talking about confidential information, like attorney-client communications.

Except it is not contract law, so using contract analysis will not work.

They are really there for the protection of the sender and most people do not expect them to be followed. CYA.

Well, like I said, I have absolutely NO idea how it works in the US, which is why I asked to begin with.
Needless to say, the US judicial system isn't exactly my top priority when it comes to learning new stuff, I'd rather go on a Cisco course or something
If those legal notes at the bottom of emails actually hold any weight in the US(or any other country by all means) at least I can understand why people put them there.
They just annoy the crap out of me, since they're utterly useless where I happen to live.

So, out of curiosity, in the US, what is confidential?
Anything with a "Confidential" stamp on it? Or some list of stuff specified in a law.

Oh and yeah, anyone who sends confidential information in an unencrypted mail should either be fired, or the IT/Security department should be fired for not training the employees properly.
We sent truckloads of very sensitive information in mails at my old job, card numbers, not-yet-official official business deals, etc, and needless to say, we never sent that without proper encryption.

i don't use signatures. but what he did annoys me even more. he simply forwarded the original email. that gives you incredibly long e-mails with the addresses of everybody. just copy the link for god's sake!
