I don't use laptops because they suck in terms of price/performance, and I find most of the people using them don't care how much they cost because mommie and daddy are already paying their college tuition.

Dig?

I also owned my first portable MP3 player in 1998, it was much lighter than an iPod, smaller than an iPod, more durable than an iPod, cheaper than an iPod, and used a better DAC than an iPod. Funny what you find when you aren't a part of Apple's universe.

Oh yeah - if OSX requires fewer updates than Windows, why is there a big fvcking button that says 'upgrade OSX' when you log into the damn things?

I love myopic posts like these. He complains that people don't branch out and find products to their liking, but then typecasts every person that owns a laptop as a spoiled kid who's parents bought it.

I run my own IT consulting company. I use both Apple and PCs. It enhances my value to my clients.

If you don't like/use Apple and you don't really have a good reason other than you can't admit that you were wrong abouthem then you are really missing out.

I used to be ignorant and rip on Apple, but I came to terms with the fact that I really didn't now anything about them. I couldn't figure out WHY I didn't like them. I bought one and really liked it. I'd bet a lot of people here would too if they just threw away their perception of what an Apple computer is and used one for a month.

This is funny because the the average Apple user I know is running a newer version of OSX than the average Windows user, yet Apple users will be quick to point out that OSX is better than Windows because it doesn't have to upgraded as much.

Damn dude, next time you quote me to try to make your argument, try quoting the whole damn sentence. The beginning of that sentence is: "Compared to OS 9, 8 and 7"

So it should read:
"Compared to OS 9, 8 and 7, OS X is like a gift from the operating system gods but isn't drastically wonderfully better than windows that some people would have you believe."

And for the record, NO I can't build a system that will beat a Mac Pro for the price. I mean, HELLO! I can get a 2.66ghz Dual Xeon from Apple for $2499. The cost of two processors off the shelf at pricewatch is $1400. A motherboard for those babies will cost me $340. 1GB of FB-DDR2 will cost me $160. A 250Gb SATA II HD is $75. 7300GT is $100. Windows XP Pro is $140 (because OS X can join a domain an Xp Home can not). So now I'm about 300 short of a Mac Pro. For the $300 I get a DL SATA DVD burner, keyboard, mouse, case and power supply. Buying all of that will easily put you up the extra $300. That doesn't seem too bad for a kick-ass computer that will run OS X AND Windows.

I'm not a Mac fanboy but what's coming off of your fingers is almost pure jibberish.

Apple switched to Intel processors because Intel had a change in philosophy, not Apple. Rather than ramping up mhz to get the job done, Intel realized it needed to do more work with the mhz it had, just like AMD and just like Moto/IBM. Switching to Intel gave Apple more processors at a lower price, plus the ability to run Windows and it's apps on it's machines which is a huge boost in it's customer image.

Mac Pro's are targeted to a certain audience. People who buy Mac Pro's aren't going to surf the web and play games on them 95% of the time. OS X apps are highly optimized for multi-proc and 64-bit. Apple has been selling consumer level dual processor machines since 2000. It's only been the last couple of years that dual-proc or dual core x86 chips have filtered to the consumer level. Not to mention that OS X apps have been written to take advantage of 64-bit instructions since 2003, something that is just not happening on the x86 side because of Vista.

You just need to calm down. Accept that both platforms have their place in the world and that neither is wonderfully more awesome than the other. They do what they do and both make people happy. Your idiocy has forced me to defend Apple when I spend almost all day defending Windows at work. Good job!

What do you expect from a CS geek? He probably wrote parts of at least one of those arcane systems from decades past.

I feel the same way. Usually they think they're the elite or something...have some weird aura around them...

I'll give you a cookie if you can get Windows to run as stable as OSX. I was a Windows fan, until I played around with OSX, and discovered what I've been missing. You cannot beat the quality of the OS when you compare Windows and OSX. Take a look at vista for instance, seems like Microsoft has taken a few notes of their own from Apple.

Yeah, multitasking on a mac is so difficult.

why is that?

no taskbar.

Command-Tab through the running apps or click the app icon in the dock. You can even combine the key command and the mouse click by leaving your finger on Command after Command-Tabbing and then clicking on the desirec app icon in the middle of the screen. Might be useful if you have 15+ apps running.

Speaking of cabbages, I've had more intelligent conversations with most of them than Apple users.

Here's another question for Apple user they don't have the nuts to answer. For the past like, decade, I've heard nothing from the Apple crowd about how Intel sucks and Motorola will take over corporate computing. Then it was the IBM processor that ruled while Apple coulnd't give away Xservers. Now you guys are running over to the Core Duo so you can run apps inside Rosetta and take a huge performance hit. Gee, if you're hardware was so good before, why are you now raving about Intel? This would be like ATI using NVidia GPU's on their cards while ATI fanboys bad mouthed Nvidia.

So, if you've been full of crap for the past decade, what makes you not full of crap now?

spikespeagel, if you have the nuts, why have you quit our last little discussion about Macs first? I bet you never encountered a Mac user in real life, Mister sysadmin of a thousand Windows boxes. All you do is searching for Mac vs PC flamefests online. You add Mac guy from the commercials and voilà there is your Mac user stereotype.

And for the small chance that you've encountered one Mac user offline, now what? I have friends who think Microsoft is great because "they have invented MSN Messenger".

Well you can think of the Mac userbase what you want, but there hasn't been a single valid argument against OS X in this thread until now (not to say that there aren't any). And you sir don't have a clue of what you're talking about. Exhibit 1:

Login Window 1
Login Window 2

Wow, the upgrade button really caught my eye there. Well maybe you stumbled upon the monthly Software Update check which by the way is a very user friendly way to keep the OS up to date. But then again you would've said update and not upgrade.

You were already criticised for quoting this out of context. By your logic MS DOS is better than Windows because it doesn't get updated anymore. But in reality, it's not Apple having OS diarrhea, but Microsoft had obstipation and operated several promising features out of the initial, delayed Vista release. Apple also produced major OS updates at a bigger pace in 2001-2004 because they've started something new that justified this.

With OS X you sometimes have to download drivers and sometimes not. The best thing are peripherals that use the zero-conf protocol named Bonjour/Rendezvous.

I also want a taskbar although how it lays out all my open windows to preview them is very nice.

I thought you could program the pad.

I've been on a mac for over 2 years now at work as my primary development machine. I have reverted to developing on my 2Ghz, 1Gb of ram PC instead of this mac. And this mac is no wimpy mac. It's the Dual-Core Intel Xeon 2.66Ghz model and has 2Gb of RAM. I just do not like the way the whole OSX works and I still to this day think OSX sucks. If Vista is getting closer to OSX as I've heard, I'll gladly stay away from Vista.

And don't get me started about the Development Environment on a Macintosh ... it's virtually unusable. You will put break points down in your code and it just will completely ignore them. In their next release of Xcode, you should see some of the "features" they are adding in, making it like it's such a big deal, when these "features" should be stuff that ANY development environment should do by default.
