I guess best would be if you took the computer to a local store and let the guys there do the job.

Prior to that you might visit MAXTOR's website, dl their utility POWERMAX and do a low-level-format on both drives.
Then take a look at the drives (I don't think you've done that so far ) and jumper them according to the desciption, cable-select is crap, as others mentionned. Take your time, relax and try it one more time. If you still have problems visit the local store.

<< ok if you can see the hard drive in the bios you are half way there.

what i would do in this situation is remove any other hard drives you have in the systemm and put this hard drive set up as Master. Get youself a win98 boot disk and maxtor should have a little utility that writes zeros to every sector etc (basically a low level format), run it and clear the hard drive completely!

Once you have done that boot and run fdisk and start from scratch again! If you want one large fat32 partition you either have to do it using win98 fdisk or a third party software as win2k will not creat partitions greater than 32gb in fat32, but will read partitions already created.

fdisk and format hard drive as per normal then try installing win2k, make sure when you install it you choose to install to an exisiting partitiona nd not to create or change them...

let us know how you go!
>>

that sounds very good but he stated

<< first, the jumper is set on chip-select and thats what i meant by auto detect (my bad). and its connected to IDE2 on the master connector. >>

If his HD is on the Master Connector (IDE 0 ) at IDE2 { sounds like in the middle of IDE cable ( which would make it Slave if he has put the jumper as "CS" ) } instead of the end which if the HD is set with jumper as "CS" it would be identified by the mobo as the Master HD on IDE 0. Yield great linkage but you state

<< Here is a FAQ for you to read, down below it says you cannot format a partition of larger than 32GB in Win2k/XP. either make 2, or use your main one in NTFS, and formatting it in NTFS is the same way, if you boot into windows, it asks you how you want to format it, just select NTFS instead of FAT32. so easy. >>

I do not know the whys or whereofs but my 40GB Maxtor (original Maxtor like the ones he is using UATA100 not the new style UATA133) is FAT32 partitioned under XPPro as one big partition of 38.1GB so I dunno what is going on here....
oh yeah thanks once again Yield and ST4RCUTTER.

<< FAT is FAT.. if the partition is over 32GB you are screwed either way. make sure it's NTFS, or partition your drive and then format into FAT sections!!! >>

Not true, you can certainly have a fat32 partition larger than 32 GB, you just can't format a fat32 from within XP/2k greater than 32GB's.

Look, all you need to do is boot with a win98se bootdisk, fdisk and delete all partitions on his disk, create a new partition whatever size he wants, reboot with the 98 bootdisk and format to fat32. Why is everyone making this harder than necissary?

Ya know, he's probably trying to format the drive correctly people. He doesn't have the drive jumpered correctly.

It does work, I've used that method many many times, I have also had several Maxtor hardrives including my 2 new 40GB ata133 and my 45GB Maxtor plus. I also read your thread Bluga, it looks to me like you simply had the jumpers wrong. That is why it was recognised as a Slave. For a Maxtor as Master, you need the vertical 2 pins nearest the ide 40pin cable jumpered, and for Slave you need NO jumper.

What is the WD (boot disk) set as? If you have that as Master and the Maxtor as cable-select then you are going to have problems every time. I have two Maxtor 40's (ata100) under Win2K one fat32 and one ntfs with no problems. If you just took the drive out the box and put it in you system then take it back out and change the jumper. Hope's this helps

<< Medusaccino , if you don't want to get bashed for your lack of troubleshooting skills don't be so quick to shift the blame to the hardware. There are a few ppl here that take "brand loyalty" to new levels if you bash their "preferred" brand of anything , especially when the hardware's not too blame. >>

Amen to that. I've been visting this board for about a year but I just joined when I felt I could make sure I knew it wasn't "user error" and I wouldn't be bashed for making a mistake. And what ever you do don't mention AMD and Intel in the same thread.

AMD and Intel make the best processors.

Oh no, watch out for the flames!

for maxtor you need to leave the jumper off for slave and the jumper on for master.

Make sure you have it on the pins for master. Is should say something on the PCB near the pins.

Do exaxtly what Yield said, aftert you do that, you must load the Highpoint raid drivers to install win2k
Hit F6 right after you put the win2k disk in, when it's ready to install
Fdisk, partition, format, Install the raid drivers and operating system.
You must install the raid drivers or you can't install win2k

Why are you looking on the website? Did you read what I wrote? There is a sticker on the top of the drive, it has a picture of the jumper arrangement and which pins to jumper for each setup. If you don't set the jumpers correctly the drive won't work. Second did you set the MODE in the bios to AUTO and not LBA? If I'm not mistake LBA is limited to 32gigs. Third, if you hard jumper one drive all drives on that chain must be jumpered. Ie if you set one to c-select, the other must be c-select, if you set one to master, the other needs to be slave. And FINALLY, what hardware do you have? If the drive is capable of UDMA 133 or 100 and your motherboard only supports UDMA XXX then you MAY need to download maxtor's untility to hard set the drive to the matching UDMA mode on your motherboard.

' course i meant cable-select, sorry

btw. i heard that for ata133/ata100 cable-select is recommended over "Master".

Anyway if his HD is SEEN in the bios...then there must be something wrong on the setup/software side and NOT with the hardware.

The HD seems to be recognized by the PC/bios. Period. I dont know what problems he has....its kinda weird

Maybe recommend a bios-update ? <----- ???!!?!?!

something is screwy here...and i bet (99,9%) it hasnt todo with two (!) faulty harddisks

btw....and i still want to emphasise that the maxtor utilities (powerdiag and maxblast etc.) may not work...they do NOT for me since i put the HD on my new board...the HD is not even recognized by these tools ! (Didnt need those tools anyway)
