That's cool. Music ain't gonna be missing you. But do share your feelings

You are absolutely correct. Once you learn music theory, your brain is incapable of listening to music without analyzing it.

You just need to gain perspective. I have no trouble enjoying food without analyzing it. You just concentrate on the experience.

So don't listen to it. View it as a craft - you think welders hang out watching other people weld?

Certain music destroys me. When I listen to certain albums they make me just want to walk off a giant bridge. So I feel ya OP.

When I feel down about my musicmaking, I just pop some Daniel Smith into the CD player and feel way better about myself.

Don't beat yourself up or obsess about it, just do it better. If you want to, anyway.

If music is your passion, don't let your passion eat you up. (There's a pill for that.)

If it's your livelihood, you probably make most of your money teaching anyway - patience, enthusiasm, and attitude are the key there, not raw ability.

Why don't you listen to bieber music so you don't have to analyze the music?
Your brain doesn't process that stuff, it just kinda gets tired.

Listening to it with a critical ear is the worst. Pop music has very little to do with music and a LOT to do with marketing.

Believing otherwise is how you get neurotic - wondering why some no talent assclown whose guitar player only knows three chords can become a multi-millionaire, while you're eating ramen in a space over your mother's garage, sucking up to your boss at Domino's so you can a couple days off to travel to an audition.

Or... marry rich!

It's a choice.

Being able to "turn it off" is music major survival guide page 1.

Easier said than done man. I can't listen to anything remotely close to being out of tune or I lose my shit. It's nigh impossible to turn off your ear. After years of theory and aural skills it's impossible for me not to analyze chord structure or listen to lazy writing.

Bad singing drives me bat shit crazy.

Listen to shape note singing. Folks pitch each song to taste. If it doesn't cure you of perfect pitch, nothing will.

Treat it like an allergy; if you can't control your reaction, control your exposure. Put on some Satriani or something, stay away from top 40 radio.

Good post man lol.

I used to get really pissed at singers getting jobs over me and watching idiots like josh groban destroy music till I started getting those jobs. After toiling in bad theaters and student outreach for a decade I felt like I earned it. Now I miss the early days singing almaviva in a pig suit and miss the smaller theaters where I performed for audiences smaller than the performers. Such is life.
