I hate my job

I can't stand it here. I used to love being here just because of the people I work with (I still love most of them). My boss is great too, but it's time for me to move on. My only problem is I don't have any other skills really.

I work in a customer service position (outsource financial reporting office, I basically run reports for financial advisers to give to their clients) and I don't really mind that at all. The field doesn't bother me, and I have about a decade of experience in customer service now and wouldn't mind moving into a higher ranking position at another company. I live in the Kansas City are and would LOVE to be on the west coast (LA etc).

Should I just work on a resume and then submit it to a lot of companies? Or throw it up on monster.com? Any tips/ideas/etc are greatly appreciated I want out!

The only thing I would say is be careful, as it might not look good to your current employer if they find your resume on Monster.

why the west coast like LA may I ask?

I have known plenty of people who claim they want to move here or there to large cities like NYC but then reality hits when they realize that visiting and actually living there are completely different.

It's hard to describe really. I like the culture, the weather, I know a few people in the area, a lot of the companies I would prefer to work for are around there, etc.

whatever you do, don't do it from work or with the work e-mail

it's fine if you post your resume up wherever, if someone from your company asks you, just say:
"I'm keeping my options open, and I like to try new things."

I definitely understand that. I am very fortunate that I have a job. It won't be the end of the world if I can't find something else, but I'd like to try my best.

I'm curious... how many people actually LIKE their job?

Second question, if you DO like your job, do you work in IT? I don't know anybody who's worked in that field for a long time and actually enjoys what they're doing.

IT, by and large, is a thankless job. Maybe some publicity and recognition on the development/application front yes, but not infrastructure support. We're not "billable" to the company.

When I worked for EB Games I enjoyed it quite a bit. Ultimately it just didn't pay well enough.

I *LOVE* my job.

As for the OP, how old are you?

Edit: I'm worried that I'm "too young" for a lot of the stuff I want to do.

I am doing something that I used to love and I can't imagine doing anything better in IT, but the fact that you do the same thing every damn day just makes it boring. I think what usually helps is if the office environment is great and the people are great... yet I sit here at home since 2-3 years ago - I can't remember how long.

Honestly, I'm sick of my job too. We've had some issues with an outside vendor we use and my boss seems to think it reflects badly on me when they screw up. I've had it with this fucking place.

I'm starting to look elsewhere. Fuck 'em, let someone else deal with this shit.

There's a support group for this you know.

They meet every day at 5:30 at this place called the Bar.

I used to like coming in to work until we were bought out from a company of arrogant assholes last August. We were (old company based in London) consistently in the top 50 places to work for in the world, good benefits, life to work ratio, good management, not afraid to keep up with new tech etc.

We have been given notice that our positions are being eliminated, the help desk is done at the end of September, the server team (my/our team) is done at the end of December. The new shitwads outsource almost all of their IS support to a company in India. They shut down all of our projects because it costs too much and the only thing they worry about is cost savings and their stock price, fucking bastards. Now I fucking hate coming in every fucking day. I've even resorted to drinking on weeknights, something I haven't done since I was in my 20's (now 44).

If anyone needs an SMS/SCCM admin in the southwest Mpls. metro area, I'm looking...lol.

It doesn't sound like you HATE your job...just that you think you're ready for a change.

Is there any room for advancement within the company? Do they offer any kind of educational assistance so that you can get more education on the comapny's dime?

Kahleeforneeya's job market is a bit...slow right now. Of course, different industries, different situations, but overall, it's not a great place to look for work...especially if you're "unskilled."

That being said, anyone who HATES his/her job and doesn't do anything about it...deserves no sympathy.

I've always lived by the rule that life is too fucking short to work at a job I HATED. I always found something else once I realized that it wasn't gonna get any better.

Some jobs, it took months to get to that point...other jobs, only a couple of hours.

No one ever said working was going to be "FUN" every minute of every day, BUT, having a job you like...and enjoy doing makes life much more enjoyable.

Working at a job you HATE...makes life suck...and IMO, it ain't worth it.

I work in IT and enjoy my job, but I've only been working for 2 years and it's a huge break from college. I've been through help desk, level 2 (they're considered same position where I work, sometimes they'll send one of us to a customer site and what not) and now doing level 3 server support.

The only thing I can say I hate about IT is there is too much politics involved. For example we have a RSA appliance all ready to go that works, but they dont want to deploy the new tokens yet. By the time it goes live the support will probably have run out on it. That's what happened to the big UPS. It was purchased almost a year ago with a 1 year warranty, and it only went live like a month ago.

They are also totally against open source and custom code, and there are so many things I see that could be done with either of those and be more efficient, easier to support, and cost efficient, but nope, they have to go with the really complicated and expensive product and have like 50 meetings before it gets done.

If ever I decide to start my own business I will probably do the same kind of work (managed services) but manage it way better, and be more open. If you have a guy who's good with cisco stuff and windows stuff, then let him work with both. Right now to get anything done involves like 5 different departments because you got the server guys, desktop guys, network guys, security guys etc all as separate entities when in reality one guy could do said project alone given the accesses. It's just so inefficient the way it runs.

But in the end I just stay out of that stuff, do my job and be happy I get a pay check. There are just things I shake my head at such as the fact we have no backups, which is slown down by some political stuff. (We have new solution coming, probably when Duke Nukem Forever comes out)

I really do like my job, but I can't stand my boss. Not in IT, I'm in sales.

I think it takes time. I mean, I got really lucky. I found a job I love at 21 (I just turned 27 this week). I've seen plenty of people start new careers in their 30s, 40s, and beyond. Just be sure to take something away from each job you have.

I love about 50% of my job, the rest sucks. But the 50% makes it worth it.

No, not in IT.
