It's illegal to open your door in front of a lane-splitting motorcycle or impede them in any way.

1) Lane splitting by motorcycles is not illegal in California when done in a safe and prudent manner.

2) Motorists should not take it upon themselves to discourage motorcyclists from lane splitting.

3) Intentionally blocking or impeding a motorcyclist in a way that could cause harm to the rider is illegal (CVC 22400).

4) Opening a vehicle door to impede a motorcycle is illegal (CVC 22517).

I have never understood people who get mad at people who lane share. Nothing is stopping anyone from getting a bike themselves and sharing lanes as well.

I realize there are some who ride that are not assholes.

My problem is with the other 90% of them. Driving like assholes, speeding, cutting cars off and my personal favorite: gunning it on city streets to show just how cool they are.

I like to watch the youtube videos of bike morons crashing. I cheer whenever one of their bikes gets destroyed.

I rode 300 miles today just for the hell of it.

Colorado is very bike friendly and an awesome place to ride.

You've only received incorrect responses so far so I might as well answer this: it isn't legal. From the factory they have quiet, baffled, legal exhausts and the first thing owners do is modify (remove the baffles, replace with straight pipes, etc). Harley used to have a reputation as the quietest bikes around and they actually encourage their customers NOT to do that.

The "loud pipes save lives" argument has been debunked and has nothing to do with your question anyway.

Actually you can blame the individual state for that. Don't like it? Call your state rep. Case in point, I live in GA and there are no standards for exhaust and no emissions checks on bikes either. I mean no disrespect. Folks seem to like to complain but not do anything about it. Me personally I like a loud exhaust but that's subjective. There is too loud. However I do intend to be heard with my bike and let folks know I'm near. It's excessive though for traffic 10 miles away to know though.
